Justin Brown Medium Popcorn The third act is a hard drop from the hilarious and unhinged first two acts of the film. Ben Stiller is completely insane. Rated: 3/5 Aug 21, 2024 Full Review Brandon Collins Medium Popcorn This is still hilarious and heartfelt. But it does falter when Ben Stiller isn't onscreen. Joey H. Released on February 17th, 1995; directed by Steven Brill, written by Brill and Judd Apatow, and a with a musical score composed by J.A.C. Redford, this film from Walt Disney Pictures tells the comedic story of a group of heavyset boys spending a summer at a weight loss camp, which has just been taken over by an overzealous, unscrupulous and borderline psychotic fitness guru. At the heart of this story is young Gerald “Gerry” Garner, an 11 year old boy from Long Island, New York. As school lets out for the summer, Gerry has absolutely no plans to do anything but hang out and have fun. However, his parents make the decision against his wishes to send him to a weight loss summer camp for boys known as Camp Hope. Gerry isn’t looking forward to going, but soon feels reassured after meeting a fellow camper named Roy Murphy. Upon arriving at the camp, Gerry quickly befriends Roy and all of his other cabin bunk mates for the summer; consisting of Michael Simms, Cody Farley, Samuel “Salami Sam” Dampier, Phillip Grubenov, Nicholas Wales and their leader Josh Birnbaum. Gerry also meets counselors Pat Finley, Tim Orford and new nurse Julie Belcher. On the first night of camp, the long time owners Alice and Harvey Bushkin are saddened to announce that they were forced to declare bankruptcy and had to sell the camp to a new owner; a maniacal fitness guru named Tony Perkis Jr, who intends to spend the summer filming a weight loss infomercial by making all of the boys work hard to lose weight. As the boys spend their summer feeling miserable, they soon come up with a plan to take over the camp and take back their summer with help from Pat, Tim, Julie, and three of Tony’s employees; foreigner Lars; former camper Dawson, and Kenny Parry the Cameraman. As the kids and counselors finally start to enjoy their summer and have a great time, they soon become strong and confident enough to take on Camp MVP, the sporting camp across the lake in an all out contest known as the Apache Relay. The adult cast in this film includes Tom McGowan as Pat Finley; Paul Feig as Tim Orford; Leah Lail as Julie Belcher; Tom Hodges as Lars, Allen Covert as Kenny Parry; David Bowe as Chris Donnelly; Tim Blake Nelson as Roger Johnson; Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller as the Bushkins; Jeffrey Tambor as Maury Garner; and Ben Stiller in a dual role as both Tony Perkis Jr and Tony Perkis Sr, the Lighting Fixture King. The film also includes future filmmakers Judd Apatow as Homer Schulz and Peter Berg as an unnamed Chef. The child actors in this film include three actors from the Mighty Ducks trilogy; Aaron Schwartz as Gerald “Gerry” Garner; Kenan Thompson as Roy Murphy; and Shaun Weiss as Josh Birnbaum. The rest of the child cast includes Robert Zalkind as Michael Simms; Cody Burger as Cody Farley; Max Goldblatt as Phillip Grubenov; David Goldman as Nicholas Wales, and Joseph Wayne Miller as Samuel “Salami Sam” Dampier. Filmed and released between the releases of D2 and D3: The Mighty Ducks, this 90s film has become a cult classic and a must watch for Disney lovers. It’s certainly a guilty pleasure of mine. I give it a solid nine out of ten. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/04/25 Full Review Universalboy2014 I Product placement I spotted.
