Critics Consensus

Hell of a Summer shows some promising ingenuity from its young directorial duo, but its lack of tonal cohesion also indicates some room for improvement.

Adam Graham Detroit News "Hell of a Summer" is a clever tribute to summer camp movies. Rated: B- Apr 7, 2025 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com Bryk and Wolfhard may like these kids too much to let them die or be imperiled in memorable ways, but they don’t like them enough to develop their personalities beyond tic-y, schticky gags. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 4, 2025 Full Review Jarrod Jones AV Club There are no establishing shots, no gradual build of suspense. But then, there are also no jokes, and the methods used to kill these characters pack no ironic punch. Rated: C- Apr 4, 2025 Full Review Lane Mills InSession Film The comedic highlight of the film is Fred Hechinger’s Jason, the aforementioned unaware camper who shines because he sticks out as so far removed from the rest of the film. Rated: B Apr 14, 2025 Full Review Chuck Bowen Style Weekly (Richmond, VA) “Hell of a Summer” is suitable midnight-with-popcorn-in-July-viewing, which is how many of us first encountered Jason to begin with. Apr 14, 2025 Full Review Jordy Sirkin Jordy Reviews It Filled with classic slasher camp shenanigans and serves an impressive debut for the young filmmakers, despite a few under-baked ideas. Darius Definitely falsely advertised… a summer camp slasher that delivers none of what makes summer camp slashers so good in the first place.. also there was a light amount of gore, and I remember the trailer saying it was a gore fest Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/16/25 Full Review lissy ryan gosling mention !! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review Chanin Fun, modern twist on the classic camp counselor VS. slasher trope! Had some good kills along with quirky humor. Definitely will be appreciated the most by a younger crowd. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review Team of 8 Funny, thriller, and scary all in one. We loved it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Michael Thought it was funny all around from beginning to end Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Color It was a silly good time! Classic campy 80’s slasher with a modern make. Funny, spooky, knew exactly what it was, and what it was doing! I’ll happily pick this one up physically!
