Eric Kohn IndieWire Just as it taps into a dying corner of American society, Hell or High Water resurrects the power of western mayhem done right. Trent Q My first reaction after watching Hell or High Water was simple: it was a good movie—nothing more. But something about it lingered. Long after the credits rolled, I found myself replaying every scene in my head—from the tender exchanges between the brother and the waitress, to the witty banter between the sheriff and his partner, to the authenticity of the woman at the T-bone diner. Every moment felt lived-in, every line of dialogue memorable. The film’s striking cinematography and haunting soundtrack created a mood that was both beautiful and unsettling. Layered within were subtle but powerful pieces of symbolism—the endless bank and loan billboards, the hollowed-out towns—that underscored the desperation the director wanted us to feel. What surprised me most was how my perspective shifted over the course of the film. At first, I saw the brothers’ robberies as reckless and wrong, something to disapprove of (yet amused by it). However, as the story unfolded and the motives became clear, I found myself sympathizing with them—quietly rooting for their success against the very institutions that had bled their family dry. And then came the ending—tense, unresolved, yet unforgettable. You could feel that the two men are bound to chase this conflict to the bitter end. In the end, Hell or High Water turned out to be a rare gem—a film that sneaks up on you, lingers in your mind, and leaves you with far more than you expected from a “random” Friday night movie with the Misus.
