Jacob B While the pacing can be a bit episodic and has some moments I didn't like such as a brief bit of juvenile humour concerning burps, I actually enjoyed Sword of Storms quite a bit. The animation is pleasing, both the actors reprising their roles from the movie and the actors exclusive to Hellboy Animated do a good job, the titular superhero's snarky dialogue got a good laugh out of me, the action is fun and the story is entertaining and might even encourage some to brush up on their knowledge of Japanese folklore. It's no Batman: Mask of the Phantasm but Hellboy: Sword of Storms is still a fun straight-to-DVD superhero adventure that's a good pick for a non-Batman-themed ideal-for-Halloween comic book movie as well as one of the better non-DC DT-DVD movies out there...and sadly, the closest we're ever going to get to more adventures with the Ron Perlman Hellboy since Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy 3 isn't happening anytime soon. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member For those garnered from the 2004 hit would probably prefer that over this decent, unnaturally second-rate animated follow-up under typical direct-to-video frequent mediocre aesthetic due to a farfetched story that supposedly stems from the comics. The downsized flair into mere charm is however definitively heightened by relying on the returning cast who carries the wit and humor over flat action. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Today's Viewing: "Hellboy: Sword Of Storms". Being The 1st Of The Hellboy Animated Series Based On The "Hellboy" Comic Book Series By Mike Mignola & The 2004 Film Of The Same Name, This Is An Animated Action Film I'd Personally Place In The 'Okay' Category. Not That I Don't Like It; There's Some Effort & Creativity Put Into It, Yet I Personally Haven't Read The Comics. There's A Few Hits & More Misses When It Comes To The Jokes, A Few Scenes Tend To Drag A Little Bit, & Sometimes A Few Shots Of Animation Seem Like Glitches...It's Like The Editing In Disney's "Inspector Gadget" (1999) When The Editing Is Clumsy At Times. And The Story Seems Rushed: It's Like 'Now This Happens!...Now This Happens!' The Acting Is Pretty Solid, As Far As I Know. The Animation Is Impressive & I'm Sure The Animators Are So Happy Looking Back On What They Accomplished. But This Film As Seems To Present Itself As A Straight-To-TV Movie, Considering It Was 1st Shown On Cartoon Network Back Then. And I Have To Admit That The Ending Was Pretty Corny Too. So Overall, Although It Could Have Been Way More Cooler & A Little More Consistent In Story, "Hellboy: Sword Of Storms" Is Decently Passable To Watch. Nothing Special, But Just.. Okay. It's An Animated Fantasy/Action Film For Teenagers & Adults That Does Deserve At Least A Viewing. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review johnathon w Solid animated movie thanks to a superb vocal cast and edgier than usual direction for the medium. The cast is superb, with Ron Perlman, Doug Jones and Selma Blair voicing their respective roles from the live-action movies with the same excellence. Behind the camera, writer/director Tad Stones does a solid job adapting the comic book into a cartoon, mostly ignoring the live-action movies (Hellboy is a public figure and doesn't have a romance with Liz, for example). He does deliver some of the series trademark humor (such the the BPRD joking how many times Hellboy disappears on missions) along with being darker than most animated movies (there are more than a few deaths here). The one downside is that the cartoony animation doesn't quite fit the subject matter, so when the darker material occurs, you can't quite take it seriously. Overall, a fun entry that shows how well Hellboy works in nearly every medium. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
