Code is everywhere. Every phone call you make, every website you visit, and even every car you drive has software powering it. Software development has been clocked in a cloud of magic that keeps most people out of the career. The film delves into the history of software development that started as a woman-led industry but has evolved into a majority white male and Asian dominated industry. It tackles the tough topic of why women as well as black and latinx people don't pursue software careers. The film aims to shine a light on how amazing a career in software can be. The reality is that now is a great time to diversity the ranks of software development, not just for the typical social reasons, but also because it makes better software and can be a generational change for many.

Audience Member As a 20+ year professional software developer I really appreciate this film. It's fun to get some sense of the history of the craft and then to dive into the issue of bias is brilliant. I especially liked the stories about what is being done in the industry to drive change. My wife, not a techie at all, watched with me and I could hear her say "Yep" under her breath throughout. Important documentary. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Hello World is an inspiring reminder of why I got into the industry. Like Wildermuth, I pray it will continue to heal into a welcoming place of inclusion for all. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member This film is a thoughtful, non-judgmental look at the software industry and its tendency to be dominated by voices that are white, male and straight. It does a magnificent job of laying out the problem and exposing the unconscious biases we all have, and their impacts. My only wish was that it had gone further into the details of what could be done about it. However, the first step to solving a problem is to recognize you have it and this film makes it clear that the problem is real, is hurting us all, and that everyone in the industry needs to take part in fixing it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member I've spent over thirty years in software development and have seen a lot of positive changes over that span. I've also been frustrated at the mono-culture that I've been part of. HelloWorld is the first film, heck maybe the first popular culture anything, that has described what the software development industry is really like. The movie doesn't shy away from exposing what had become, but is moving away from, a white-man's game. Through interviews with many thoughtful, experienced engineers, designers and computer science faculty, the film shows the struggle we've had to make the industry more inclusive of women and people of color. Watch this film whether or not you are interested in software development (but especially if you are!). It will open your eyes thanks to the way it speaks through the voices of those actively working in the field. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member No matter if you're interested to get into the software industry or you already are, you should do yourself a favor and watch this movie. Most of us struggled with a sense of belonging to a larger community. This movie talks about how the tech industry has evolved, why it's still struggling with including people and what can be done about it. Easily one of the best software documentaries out there!
