Louis H Screened at TIFF 2024: The TIFF program described the film this way: “Sassi (Sasson Gabay) is more than 20 years older than his wife Effi (Asi Levi) and worried about his declining powers. Surgery has left him seeking treatment for impotence, but Effi insists she’s content with their emotional closeness. In her work as a physical therapist, though, Effi sees every day the link between body and heart.” I liked the “declining powers” euphemism; I should have read the rest. I was expecting all the ups and downs in the couples relationship, you know, the younger wife torn between love and desire, the older husband dealing with his health issues and his guilt (hey, it’s a Jewish movie, after all), the wife seeking “alternatives”, the couple caught in endlessly evolving emotions. Nope. As it turns out, it’s hard to find a prostate that can act properly, so it got shoved in a supporting role. Sossi and Effi find themselves having to work multiple jobs to support their family, including Sassi’s son, the kind of screwup found in every family (two in mine!). Then Effi’s past and long-forgotten “indiscretion” resurfaces… And that’s just the start. And because this film, once again, illustrates how different cultures manage (or don’t) with the same problems affecting every family on earth, I was reminded why I specifically seek foreign (i.e., not from North America) films at TIFF.
