      Hemingway & Gellhorn

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Nicole Kidman's poised performance provides some measure of reclamation for Martha Gellhorn, but this trite historical melodrama reduces Ernest Hemingway and the era that the two war correspondents lived through into a broad caricature.

Audience Member Nicole Kidman does a fantastic job as Gellhorn. She successfully portrays Gellhorn as a strong, independent woman. The overall story is okay at best. Great movie for a fun watch, bad movie for its historical attributes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Is it over-hyped? Is it over-dramatized? Is it stereotypical? Yes. What this TV movie portrays is the energy of the larger than life personalities that have once walked this earth in times that challenged humanity in ways our generation has not, and cannot fathom. The willingness of oneself to put oneself in harms way for the sake of the good fight, to defend the ideals that one has for what humanity might be, and what it might become, and the rawness of this story is a compelling one... which makes this depiction, a depiction worth watching. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Clive Owen gives an outstanding performance has Hemingway. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member poor film, choppy movie, could've bern good but wasn't. too many video tricks. black and white sepia. none of the dots are connected and poor storytrlling. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member My last revision was lost. Might have to rewrite this one a couple more times. The first quarter was a bit tedious, but then the romance and passion took off. This is historical, and I was glad to learn about Gellhorn. What an amazing woman! The things she saw and wrote about. Helping the world to understand how horrific war is, can be, was. She didn't run away. She faced it, wrote, and kept going back. I liked it. More another day. *Continued* Another day has finally come so here's a bit more. About Hemmingway....not what I expected but I knew nothing of the real Hemmingway going into this except he was a writer. His personality was something else. He was really brought to life here, his distinctive personality showcased well by Clive Owen and the directing, writing. Interesting guy, not great husband material for the average woman. Hal Boedeker Orlando Sentinel The movie builds a persuasive case for the trailblazing Gellhorn, who worked while Hemingway played. She didn't see herself as a footnote in his life, and this enjoyable movie makes sure she isn't. Jun 3, 2020 Full Review Donna Bowman AV Club It may be too much to ask for a TV movie based on historical personages with such tumultuous lives to show some restraint. Then again, "too much" isn't a bad way to sum up the problems of Hemingway & Gellhorn. Jun 3, 2020 Full Review Alexandra Fuller Newsweek Kidman manages quietly to evoke something else of this ferocious, aging journalist -- an underlying and unsettling degree of disappointment and hurt. Jun 1, 2020 Full Review Adrian Martin Film Critic: Adrian Martin Hemingway & Gellhorn, for all its awkwardness as historical drama, is never less than interesting to watch, and sometimes captivating. Jun 26, 2020 Full Review Jeff Simon Buffalo News Hemingway and Gellhorn couldn't have more wrong with it if it tried. And that's tragic because it does one thing -- and one thing only -- so very right that it deserves to be seen... Rescuing Martha Gellhorn from a pitiable damnation of history. Jun 3, 2020 Full Review Brice Ezell PopMatters Despite this narrative unevenness, Stahl and Turner's sharp, literary script -- buoyed by Kidman and Owen's stellar turns -- keeps Hemingway & Gellhorn afloat.
