Claudia Puig FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I love the music and I think the man is fascinating... [But] we needed a more seasoned, artful director - not just because it wasn't very well paced, but because there were things that were repetitive and others that were completely left out. Oct 10, 2020 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I love Herb Alpert and listening to all of these stories about him and his musical legacy was absolutely fascinating to me... It's fairly decent filmmaking, but ordinary filmmaking. Oct 10, 2020 Full Review Mark Feeney Boston Globe It's mostly devoted to Alpert's blissful second marriage, to singer Lani Hall - they've been married nearly 50 years - and his philanthropic largess. But since there's a lot to gush about, that's okay. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 5, 2020 Full Review Pat Mullen POV Magazine Herb Alpert is...formulaic? Oct 22, 2020 Full Review Chuck Foster Film Threat As a subject, Alpert comes across exactly like his public persona: gentle, soft-spoken, and humble. Rated: 8/10 Oct 16, 2020 Full Review Steven Sheehan The Digital Fix Profiling an artist like Herb Alpert doesn't require the reinvention of the documentary wheel and Scheinfeld moves through his career in traditional form. John B Wow. Herb Alpert Is.. shows how much Alpert contributed to music through his own recordings and through A&M Records. That he is still out on the road with his wife Lani (from Brasil '66) and his band playing so energetically at many dates a year because he just loves to play was amazing to watch. This documentary inspired me to look around to see if he was playing anywhere near me and I was lucky enough to see him play at the end of July. If you can't see him live, you have to see this documentary. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/15/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie reveals the history of a man who has trumpeted kindness, generosity, respect for persons, empowerment of talent and a legacy of great, great...well, trumpeting! (As well as other forms of music.) He was a personal brand-builder before the term was invented, and from Sting to Quincy Jones to Questlove to astronauts it was nice to hear others' testimonies of him. As a fan of positivity I loved it, though I think even skeptics would have to accede to Herb Alpert's wonderful story. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Such a delight to spend this time with a great artist and the joyful music he created through the years. And, to see his impact on the music world with all of the up and coming artists he supported is just incredible. Finally, what a bright and positive inspiration he is through his deep philanthropic commitments. The film brought much needed positivity to my head and heart, especially during these troubling times. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
