A couple (Dorothy Vogel, Herbert Vogel) redefine what it means to be an art collector.
Herb and Dorothy

What to Know

Critics Consensus

While perhaps not as probing as it could have been, Megumi Sasaki's languidly paced documentary is as entertaining as it is inspiring.

The movie gives us an eyeful, but the unexamined irony is that the nice old couple can't sell the rest of us on why it's good. Go to Full Review

Sasaki balances her subjects' yarns with insights into the cultural moment that shaped them and vice-versa, in particular the shift from abstract expressionism to the sparer gestures of minimalist and conceptual art. Go to Full Review

If Ripley's Believe It or Not! were still around, Herb and Dorothy Vogel would surely be in it for amassing a world-class art collection on the most ordinary of working-class salaries. Go to Full Review

Herb & Dorothy Vogel are my new heroes. They prove definitively that anyone can appreciate, love and buy art. Plus, it's clear they adore each other as much as they love their collection. Go to Full Review

07/31/2022 The greatest 01 hour: and 31 minutes with real footage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See more 08/22/2015 They didn't think that their collection is investment. They often bought works of artist before they became famous. They thought growth of artists is more important than completeness of their works. They kept in touch with the artists after buying their works. Artists sometimes sold their works at discount price because the artists knew that Herb and Dorothy were not rich. It is amazing that Herb and Dorothy just collected works they like without selling any of them for interests. It's also remarkable that they enjoyed interaction with the artists. Their collection became so big that many museums paid attention to it. Finally they had problem in keeping the works in their apartment and donated them to National Museum. There was no hesitation because they were government worker and their collection was not their investment to get return. They fully enjoyed their collection and they can still enjoy the exhibits free of charge after donation. Herb passed away in 2014 and Dorothy stopped buying collection because she thought it's meaningless to do it without Herb. What a wonderful life they had!
