Drew Gregory Autostraddle I have never seen an American military film with this level of political clarity and few with its artistic merit. Jan 31, 2023 Full Review Robert Daniels RogerEbert.com A final breathtaking shot that establishes Zonana’s “Heroic” as the boldest swing against an institution that we’ve seen in quite some time. Jan 26, 2023 Full Review Wendy Ide Screen International David Zonana’s stark and accomplished second feature shines a light on the normalisation of violence in Mexico, and on the cyclical nature which perpetuates it. Stephanie O. With Heroic, David Zonana dissects a burning issue of concern and attacks it visually and sonically, sometimes discombobulating what we believe we are seeing and should be feeling about military institutions that we’ve been led to believe exist for our good and the good of those with whom they interact. At the base of Zonana’s drama-thriller lies the deeper issue of why so many in Mexico decide to join the military in order to wear one of the country’s most respected uniforms. Or perhaps, is it one of the most feared? In the case of Luis (Santiago Sandoval Carbajal), who joins the Heroic Military Academy, he does so in hopes of being able to provide healthcare for his diabetic mother through military insurance. Later on, in a truly unique homage to Stanley Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket”, we’re introduced to the always-grinning psychopath, Sergeant Eugenio Sierra. Luis experiences a different level of exposure to the truth of the Academy, its higher-level constituents and leaders, and the military institutions of Mexico — corruption and evil seeping through all levels.
