Matthew Lickona San Diego Reader Mostly, this is an introduction into the less visceral, more deadly nightmare of bureaucratic wrangling between various museums, technical experts, and historians. Rated: 1/5 Nov 18, 2016 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader When this documentary sticks to Bosch's florid imagery... it's fascinating. But director Pieter van Huystee, needing a story arc, punctuates the scholarly material with dry bureaucratic sequences. Oct 6, 2016 Full Review Kate Taylor Globe and Mail The story of a determined quest is always enlivened by insights into the clawing animals, bizarre monsters and sinful humans that populate Bosch's fantastical visions. Rated: 3/4 Aug 26, 2016 Full Review Dustin Chang ScreenAnarchy Hieronymus Bosch: Touched by the Devil is one of the most engrossing documentaries about art and an artist in recent years... Jul 17, 2020 Full Review Lauren Palmer Hyperallergic In a way it is van Huystee's camera that is the most compelling character, as it assumes the role of auxiliary team member while simultaneously becoming a careful observer. Feb 4, 2020 Full Review Andrew Parker The Gate There's just enough close reading of Bosch's work to enthrall those interested with the nuts and bolts of the artist's work, but also plenty to engage those looking for a decidedly more human and modernist element. Audience Member 1/27/17 Netflix One of the reasons I enjoy documentaries so much is they are generally entertaining but also informative. This one could have been more informative on Bosch and his life and a little less so on the bureaucratic wrangling among museums. I have always been a fan of Bosch's art and this gave a pretty in depth look at the people, demons, fires and owls he is famous for. They showed more of his myriad characters than the naked eye can usually capture which I really liked. A little more art and a little less business would have been a better film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Four stars for the beauty of Bosch's work alone. Great soundtrack. The movie itself was a patchwork, as if many dots were disconnected. It needed a good journalist perspective, the questions of who, what, where, and why were always left unanswered. Half the time avenues that the film went down were left unexplored, so you are lost much of the time trying to figure out what the film was trying to tell you. A great missed opportunity not to explore the people, the methods, and the life behind the artist and those trying to decipher his work. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
