DanTheMan 2 Most Wong Jing movies are difficult to quantify, they have tones that go from 0 to 100 within the same scene with a flair for inventive action, High Risk is no exception to this rule. Parodying Hollywood action vehicles Die Hard and, to a lesser extent, Speed, High Risk is far from a shallow and shabby clone, at least when the nonsense backs off and Jet Li is allowed to get down to business and do what he does best, kick arse. Jing's camerawork has a visceral urgency and there's a particularly brutal edge to the violence (this is the movie that blows up a busload of innocent school children in its opening scene after all), Jing wants to show whenever possible that these characters are getting hurt and when it's not possible does stuff to dummies that are beyond descriptions. It's all highly enjoyable stuff with a great musical score to boot, but, where this movie falls apart is Jing's relentless send-up of Jackie Chan, played by Jacky Cheung (go figure), which ultimately feels childish and out of place in the stronger aspects of this movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/28/23 Full Review Justin T This was quite a strange film really. It had some quite strong violence and it also had childish comedy. The comedy is quite funny and tongue-in-cheek. I thought that it was fine overall. It was like violent Rush Hour (1998) with bad dubbing and less comedy. I think that this would have been better if I was on drugs. The comedy would have been funnier and the violence more shocking. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I watched this when I was younger and didn't really pay any attention. Watched it again and boy, no one can beat the actions here. 10/10 will watch again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Review: I really found it hard to get into this oriental Die Hard/Blown Away type movie, because the acting was pretty bad, along with the shoddy storyline. The baddie was trying to hard to be like Alan Rickman in the first Die Hard movie and Jet Li, who plays an actors bodyguard, looked uncomfortable in this American style movie. Some of the action scenes weren't bad, but I must admit, I did drift off a couple of times whilst watching it. On the plus side, it does have a well thought through twist at the end which surprised me, but apart from that I did lose interest after a while. Disappointing! Round-Up: This movie does prove that Jet Li was trying to cover every genre in the early part of his career but I personally prefer him in the more authentic movies. The guy that he was protecting in this film, became really annoying after a while, along with the reporter who thought a lot of herself. There are some scenes that are a blantantly the same as Die Hard but you have to really know the film to notice them. It also seemed a bit weird that they used a English speaking Hop Hop soundtrack throughout the movie but thats just me being picky. Disappointing  Budget: N/A Worldwide Gross: $11.4million I recommend this movie to people who are into their Jet Li movies about a bodyguard whose trying to save some kidnapped individuals from a group of jewel thieves. 2/10 Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Jet Li is great in this movie but Jacky Cheung's comedic style of Kung Fu isn't really to my taste, especially considering the movie's tone is so serious I don't feel there was room for any comedy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member This action-packed clone of Die Hard is infact a parody. The story is about Kit played by Jet Li who is working at a police force and tries to save his family in a bus which is designated with a bomb. The bomb being designed by a terrorist named "The Doctor", Kit speaks to him over the phone and unsuccessfully has another man to cut the red wire forcing the bus to explode with the clever mind of The Doctor. Years later, Kit is now the bodyguard of actor Frankie played by Jackie Cheung who is famous for doing his won stuntwork. But he is nothing but an imitation of Jackie Chan and really a drunken womaniser making Kit do all of Frankie's stunts. They both attend a gala event at a high-rise hotel where Kit finally encounters The Doctor, his sidekicks, his partners and his henchmen. The terrorists take hostage as the police arrive and while Frankie runs short of courage, it's up to Kit to take on his nemesis and confront his past. This explosive, amazing film had a bit of everything in it. Jet Li leads the show once again this time with Jackie Cheung by his side as a Jackie Chan lookalike. There are similarities to Die Hard with the whole "cop-saves-hostages-from-terrorists" situation. The Doctor character was genius and so were the other baddies. Jackie Cheung as Frankie was well-written as Frankie. This naturally pissed off the real Jackie Chan because they were spoofing him which he found disrespectful and a disgrace. There's a scene where Frankie wears a yellow jumpsuit and the gala is designed just a film that will inspire another film years later...? Kill Bill Vol.1 (2003)? Anyway, this movie had it all which is why High Risk gets a weak 9.8/10. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
