Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times An unconvincing, harmless action movie that at its best moments is a pale echo of Raiders [of the Lost Ark]. Perry H I first saw this film after it worked its way down from the cinema to video in the 1980s… a process that took years back then. I had never even heard of it , but since it was in stock and sitting there on the rack I took it home. I was pleasantly surprised at how entertaining this film was. As with all such things that pique my curiosity, I looked into the background of the movie. I don’t really understand the comparisons to Raiders of The Lost Ark. Selleck is a semi-burnt out pilot that could use a cash infusion. There is no tomb raiding or ancient treasure hunting. Just a man hired to escort a wealthy man’s spoiled (but otherwise capable) daughter on a trip halfway round the world to find her eccentric father. The trip follows the two, flying two dilapidated but operational Curtis Jenny biplanes as they hazard the perils of 1920s backwater nations, on their way to China. It’s got humor, adventure and a few thrills thrown in along the way. I last saw this film decades ago but I remember it well enough that I ordered a copy on DVD. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Audience Member Very underrated film. Story is entertaining and easy to watch. Acting was superb and the score is wonderful! Do yourself a favor and check out this unfairly forgotten film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/09/24 Full Review Mike P Not bad. A watchable copycat of Raiders of the Lost Ark; competently made. And it gives us a flavor of what Tom Selleck would have been like in Raiders. Which is fine. He's no Harrison Ford; but he's a passable hero in his own right. And Bess Armstrong gives solid support. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/10/23 Full Review Amanda S It felt like non stop yelling by the heiress and the pilot she hired. I wanted to like the movie but just couldn't get past all the yelling, she's spoiled and annoying. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/27/23 Full Review Tom S God-effing-awful. Avoid like the plague. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/15/23 Full Review DW L The more time passes, the more I love this movie. At the time it came out, it was compared to Raiders of the Lost Ark, a bar difficult to get near much less over. Taken on it own, it is an enjoyable adventure and male fantasy romance. Fun characters, sweeping vistas (though almost entirely shot In Croatia I think), and beautiful arial scenes. John Barry's score is gorgeous and a preview of both Out of Africa and Dances With Wolves music. By todays shallow standards of CGI adventure, this is an enjoyable classic.
