Audience Member interesting and fun to watch movie about Hildegard Knef. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Average in general. But this movie looks really like a TV-movie instead & reminds me < La Vie En Rose > in every aspect. Lately I've been thinking about the position of the German Cinema. Unlike the Hollywood industry, or even Asian, French, Spanish, Italian & Latin Cinemas: they've made some really great movies but thousands tons of rubbish are being produced at the same time. According to my viewing experiences, movies from the German (Scandinavian, sometimes, as well) Cinema generally are up to a certain standard (that said, I seldom dislike a German movie much even though it is lame enough, in comparison to the Cinemas mentioned above); but unfortunately, there also seems to be something (let's call it 'magic') missing to draw audiences' love other way round either. And, this one is just an example. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Really fun movie about Hildegard Knef, big German star in the postwar era. At the end of the War, while still a teenager, she was the mistress of a major German filmmaker. She disguised herself as a man when the Russians marched into Berlin. After the war, made her debut as the star of "Murderers are Among Us," the first big postwar German film. In the 50s, she's provoked a huge scandal by appearing nude in "The Story of a Sinner." At a news conference, she rebuked the press, saying, "just a few years ago, the press sat quietly as 6 million Jews were murdered...now you're provoking a revolution because of a couple of breasts." She left Germany, was successful in the US, particularly on Broadway. When she returned to Germany she emerged primarily as a singer. Her best song is "Fuer mich soll es rote Rosen regnen ..." [Red roses will rain down for me]. The movie is a great companion piece to Fassbinder's "Marriage of Maria Braun"--strong Faustian female character climbs her way to the top during the economic miracle.
