Hockney offers few revelations for viewers familiar with its subject, but it remains an affectionate and thoroughly entertaining look at a British national treasure.

Audience Member Hockney is a great artist and this movie gives you some insight in to the artist and his work. The movie itself is kind of boring (2 stars) but I'll give it a bonus star because his artwork is very good. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review dave d I guess it's fitting that an artist's story would be told mostly in art, pictures, and video. It helps prop up an otherwise uninspired documentary. Listening to his friends talk about David Hockney there isn't much that is inspiring about him. Nearly the entire two hours is quite surface. His art is wonderful, and by all accounts he appears to be a nice man, but I didn't need to sit through this and neither do you. For Hockney fans only and even they may not learn anything about the subject. Final Score: 4.3/10 Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I enjoyed much of the film and found it visually beautiful. However, I found it agonizingly long during the last 20 minutes or so. It could have benefitted from serious editing and perhaps a sharper focus on certain aspects of Hockney's life and work. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Wow. Great original footage shot by David in super8. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Fascinating! I learned so much about art and depicting time and space. He is a modern master. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member What an unbelievable talent. Just watching this has made me in awe of this artist even more... The amount of different media he has used over the years... The concepts and ideas he has frivolously toyed with... Talent of extraordinary proportions. Fascinating documentary & very real. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Pat Padua Washington Post Despite ... sometimes dizzying artistic mood swings, "Hockney" remains grounded in the people and places that shaped the artist and his art. Rated: 3/4 Jun 2, 2016 Full Review Matthew Lickona San Diego Reader It takes nearly an hour before anyone discusses anything conceptual, but what comes before is sufficiently entertaining, and what comes after, sufficiently illuminating. Rated: 2/5 May 27, 2016 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times The finished feature works well as a Hockney primer, but it's nothing we haven't seen before in the many TV documentaries made about the same artist over the years. Rated: 3/5 May 26, 2016 Full Review Steve Cruz OUT FRONT Magazine (Denver) A smart and endearing watch that deftly avoids gushing or being precious. May 9, 2023 Full Review David-Elijah Nahmod Bay Area Reporter A loving look inside the private life of a man who always remained true to himself and his art. Jun 10, 2020 Full Review Michael J. Casey Boulder Weekly Hockney is a work of artistic portraiture, one that is as refreshing and enjoyable as a spring breeze. Aug 6, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews
