Critics Consensus

Hold the Dark's unsettling aesthetic offers more of what filmgoers expect from director Jeremy Saulnier - and is often enough to prop up shaky narrative underpinnings.

Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting Holding the dark - embracing it within, or keeping it away - is what all of Saulnier's films are about. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 29, 2018 Full Review Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald A grim, unsettling and ultimately forgettable Netflix horror flick that has a surprisingly high daytime body count for something that takes place mostly in the dark night of the Alaskan winter. Oct 10, 2018 Full Review Robert Daniels 812filmreviews Saulnier's lens has become more defined and his pursuit of the shot intenser...Saulnier's pursuit of the shot gives the film not just an authenticity, but encapsulates the mood of the adapted screenplay. Rated: 3/4 Oct 4, 2018 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine Nearly two hours long and smothered in portent, this is either just no fun or straight-up overwrought. Jan 4, 2023 Full Review Taylor Baker Drink in the Movies Episode 11: Moving On Rated: 90/100 Sep 1, 2021 Full Review Dan Buffa KSDK News (St. Louis) Wright looks confused the entire film, things get very weird late, and at the end, you are depressed and wondering what you watched. Alex A Under rated film. One of this directors best films. And he’s made nothing but good films. People didn’t like it because they didn’t get it or understand what was going on so their ego’s were hurt because they couldn’t quite keep up. If you read between the lines, the movie makes a ton of sense. And it’s actually super smart and good. It’s on my rewatch list. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Jeffrey P The start isn’t good, the plot is kinda loose and iffy, and the resolution isn’t much of a resolution at all. Despite that, it’s still able to overcome with strong acting and intense suspense and action. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/27/24 Full Review Henry B what is the point of this? There is no rhyme or reason to this movie. What a waste of good actors in this nonsense. Typical self-indulging Hollywood flick that is not good, bad or badly made. It's junk. I wish I could take my two hours back. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/21/24 Full Review Ari V I really wanted it to come together in the end and to some coherent thesis. I looked and looked, but it just doesn't appear to be there. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/20/24 Full Review Harry O The movie starts out slow, but intriguing, but by the end it makes no sense and leaves too many unanswered questions. Ambiguity is sometimes fine, but not in a film like this. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review Mark s Not very believable, writing was terrible.
