Critics Consensus

Sarah Paulson is as arresting as ever, but a dearth of incident and scares ultimately robs Hold Your Breath of long-awaited release.

Abby Monteil Chicago Reader Less successful is first-time feature directors Crouse and Joines’s handle on its genre storytelling...as much as a grounded Paulson commits, this cycle of repetitive fake outs manages to make this unique horror setting feel utterly forgettable. Oct 16, 2024 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday It's a fine example of slow-burn and character-driven horror storytelling. Rated: 3/4 Oct 9, 2024 Full Review Matt Glasby Empire Magazine For a debut feature, this dustbowl survival flick shows undeniable promise. But committed performances and striking cinematography can’t stop a shaky narrative crumbling at the last.  Rated: 2/5 Oct 8, 2024 Full Review Jayne Nelson Radio Times As credulity is increasingly strained, all the good performances in the world can't offset the tedium. Rated: 2/5 Oct 25, 2024 Full Review Mel Valentin That Shelf As fully committed as she is, even Paulson struggles to elevate [Hold Your Breath's] thin and underdeveloped material, which would probably be better suited to an episode of a horror anthology series. Oct 20, 2024 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate Despite Sarah Paulson's agonized performance, this is a frustrating, forgettable psychological horror story cloaked in a malevolent quasi-supernatural plot. Rated: 4/10 Oct 19, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Darth K This was so freaking boring 😴 Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/31/24 Full Review Kyle M Psychologically observed much prior to ensure the obvious with distressful results and zero advantageous usage for a meaninglessly flat tale, albeit Paulson’s channeled masquerade and Miller’s emotional display. (C+) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/29/24 Full Review Themba C Good movie. Not the type to watch over a sleepover with friends or family. More 'one more movie before I go to bed' type. Sarah Paulson was great in it and the rest of the cast did well too. The pacing could possibly have been better or maybe better scare to narrative ratio but I think to conclusion makes up for that! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/28/24 Full Review Valerii Ege D Hold Your Breath is an accomplished story of paranoia set in the heart of desolation. Although the film's narrative requires a minimalistic approach, the performances are outstanding. It reminded me of Victor Sjöström's The Wind from 1928. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/28/24 Full Review Danny S The twist at the end was a disappointment. I was hoping for a supernatural element, and it was teased, but it was a plot point that didn't happen. The main issue I have with this movie is that there are too many plot points going nowhere. What was with the healer? What happened with the stranger? Did the stranger not heal the older girl? What about the grey man? The grey man should have been a real thing in the story. The Stranger's plot should have had an ending. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/28/24 Full Review Alejandra C another remake. Sarah is a good actress so the movie was boosted a bit. Its an alright movie though.
