Christine Evans (Jane Powell) -- teen daughter of Jeffrey Evans (Walter Pidgeon), American ambassador to Mexico -- becomes her father's self-appointed party planner. Christine hires legendary Latin band leader Xavier Cugat and fiery singer Toni Karpathy (Ilona Massey), unaware that Toni is Jeffrey's old flame. Romantic confusion abounds as Christine falls for an aging pianist, a teenage girl pines for Jeffrey and Jeffrey crosses paths with Toni in the days leading up to the party.
