To keep her spirits high when their son leaves for college, Manhattanite Kate Conrad (Kristin Davis) has booked a 'second honeymoon' with her husband. Instead of thanking her, he brings their relationship to a sudden end; jilted Kate proceeds to Africa for a solo safari. During a detour through Zambia, she helps her pilot, Derek Holliston (Rob Lowe), rescue an orphaned baby elephant. They nurse him back to health at a local elephant sanctuary, and Kate extends her stay through Christmastime. Far from the modern luxuries of home, Kate thrives amidst majestic animals and scenery. Her love for the new surroundings just might extend to the man who shared her journey.

Rob Lowe has an impressive legacy in film, but he also has a knack for picking less-than-stellar projects. "Holiday in the Wild" feels like a mashup of Hallmark sentimentality with a dash of cheesy humor, reminiscent of low-budget flicks. The plot revolves around him pursuing his love interest, developing a typical back-and-forth dynamic that leads to the same predictable outcome found in countless similar films. While the setting in the wilderness offers a slight twist, the movie ultimately fails to take any real risks or explore creative avenues. It feels flat and lacks substance, almost as if it exists solely to fill a slot for a streaming service. It seems crafted to capitalize on easy viewership rather than to offer something memorable. In the end, it’s not atrocious, but it’s definitely not something I’d want to revisit.

This is such a good movie. It’s about finding yourself in the midst of problems and change. It also shines the light on the positive work being done in elephant conservation. Beautiful scenery, good acting. Feel good movie. Love it.

Ok I am rating this on the Hallmark/ holiday movie scale. Not cinematic, predictable but it does what it set out to do. If you find yourself here considering should I watch this, then you are here for a movie on that specific scale. It is acted well, the leads are charming, the scenery and the animals beautiful, and the story is nice and feel good. It does not break new ground, or challenge the viewer. It works on the level it operates on.
