Critics Consensus

A visual treat rich in symbolism, The Holy Mountain adds another defiantly idiosyncratic chapter to Jodorowsky's thoroughly unique filmography.

Peter Bradshaw Guardian Hardly a moment passes in this movie without a situationist display of outrageousness; it is a dream tableau of the weird and occasionally wonderful. Brynne M I felt that The Holy Mountain could have been executed better. Although the interpretive meaning and visuals throughout the story were intriguing, and unnecessarily graphic, I feel like towards the middle of the movie in which the other members are introduced was dragged out for too long, and after the first couple of scenes, it became almost predictable. And so, a big chunk of the movie became lackluster as I didn't feel it was necessary to the message of this film. The only reason why I didn't completely dislike the movie was because of how I felt that the ending perfectly resolved the film after questioning theologies and philosophical thoughts, and inviting the audience to consider their own ideas. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review Michael B I found the Holy Mountain to be a bizarre film that is entertaining, or at least it sufficiently manages to capture your attention due to the unusualness of its story and visuals. That being said I do not believe this film is everyone’s cup of tea, because it has some triggering scenes that definitely earn this film its R rating. To explain my experience with the film I would say that these mature scenes almost drove me away from finishing the movie, but I could not help but be captivated by the odd and dreamlike journey it depicts. Frankly I would not choose to watch this film again, nor would I recommend it to just anybody. But I can’t help admit that it was far from the least entertaining film I’ve watched and it could be interesting depending on if you have a taste for spiritual, religious, bizarre themes and shock factor. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/25 Full Review Amanda R The Holy Mountain movie is a very hard thing to review given that it was one of the most inappropriate and horrific things I've ever watched. Given this it is hard to review what the movie was trying to signify and or the entire plot of it. Throughout watching the only thing I could help but notice was the gruesomeness and how truly disturbing it was. After watching the Holy Mountain I am still unclear what the point of its making was. I find the creator to be very inappropriate and it makes me question who he is as a person given that they are not just regular nudity but also child nudity which felt extremely illegal to be watching. Overall, I would never recommend this movie to anybody and should honestly never be played. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/25 Full Review Zandersaurus T Got done watching "The Holy Mountain," and man, what an experience! Alejandro Jodorowsky really knows how to take you on a surreal ride through themes of spirituality and the strange. This film feels like a wild fever dream, packed with stunning visuals and deep symbolism that left me questioning everything. Each scene is like a piece of art, and the characters are so unconventional and memorable—they represent all sorts of societal critiques and human lust. I can’t stress enough that this isn’t your typical movie; you’ve got to be ready for the weird and wonderful. If you’re into avant-garde films and want to challenge your perspective, definitely give it a shot. Just be ready for a mind-bending journey that will wait around in your thoughts long after it’s over! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/25 Full Review Andrew R Personally I thought the movie was extremely weird and I actually found it quite disturbing. I understand that this is the point of "underground" or "midnight" films, but it is just on a level that makes me question what kind of sick and twisted things go through Alexandro Jodorowsky's head when he writes films like this. I don't really at all understand the point of all the child nudity, the nudity overall, or the DISGUSTING acts like when the man put his finger in the person's behind. From a storytelling standpoint I see that this group was trying to reach the "Holy Mountain" and was trying to reach immortality, but the way that this ideas was portrayed was very weird to me. Of course, this is just a personal assessment of the film, and there may be people out there who think this is a fantastic film. I just do not happen to be one of them. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/25 Full Review Audience Member Alejandro's Jodorosky's The Holy Mountain was an interesting journey of delving into the otherworldly and the bizarre. Even various actions done by the characters made so many sequences far more interesting than it led on to believe. Imagery and symbolism were the topic elements present throughout the film that builds within the narrative through the use of different religions and practices altered in some form. There were also various notions to colonialism which I truly love: the scene with the lizard and frogs. That scene demonstrates what the Spanish Conquistadors did when arriving in Mexico during that time period. I found that scene in particular to be both rather funny and dark at the same time. I would recommend at least watching it once, but it's not a film to rewatch in my opinion. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/25 Full Review Read all reviews
