Critics Consensus

A visual treat rich in symbolism, The Holy Mountain adds another defiantly idiosyncratic chapter to Jodorowsky's thoroughly unique filmography.

Peter Bradshaw Guardian Hardly a moment passes in this movie without a situationist display of outrageousness; it is a dream tableau of the weird and occasionally wonderful. Nick O The only time I have ever felt hungover the next day just from watching a movie. Jordowsky is an alchemist with a camera and will have you questioning your beliefs by the end of this celluloid trip. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/29/25 Full Review Marcus U The holy Mountain was a visually stunning film. The imagery in this film feels surreal and gives an eerie feeling. The shots from this film make me truly appreciate the camera work that was put into this film. The film dives deep into themes like religion, greed, and power. This movie really makes you think because of all the symbolism buried beneath the surface. The goal of the film was to reach religious and spiritual enlightenment by reaching the holy mountain. Some scenes can give off a disturbing and random feeling, but everything is done purposefully for the viewer to ponder on the overarching themes. At times, I did find it hard to follow, but overall, it's a unique artistic masterpiece that was ahead of its time that I would recommend. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/20/25 Full Review Haley R The Holy Mountain was an overall pretty good movie. I really enjoyed the cinematography filled with dream like images and surreal visuals. This movie explored complex themes like money, power, religion and search of enlightenment. The overall aesthetic of the movie really intrigued me and contributed to the film’s special atmosphere. This movie pushed boundaries and norms making it relate to the counter culture. It highlights and portrays all the flaws in society and is not scared to be controversial. It contains many thought provoking and shocking scenes that really make you think. This movie also uses humor and absurdity while exploring themes of human nature. I do think I would recommend this movie to people who are interested in that type of aesthetic. Overall I think this movie is visually inspiring and fun to watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/20/25 Full Review Ronin S I think this film is an artistic masterpiece. I'll be honest straight away and say I didn't fully understand the film but I can say a lot of work was put into the making of the film which I greatly appreciate. I understand the idea in which the thief pursues in the quest of enlightenment and forgiveness. The film intertwines allegorical storytelling, esoteric themes, and striking visuals to subvert traditional narratives, delving into the realms of spiritual enlightenment and personal transformation. To be honest my mind was drifting from the story as I was just stunned at how beautiful each shot was light and dressed by production design. The cinematography also perfectly accents the scenes. In conclusion the film is amongst the greatest pieces of cinema and is the perfect execution of art birthed from many talented people. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/20/25 Full Review Diamond M The Holy Mountain is one of the strangest movies I’ve ever seen, but i couldnt stop watching it honestly. Its like a feverdream with crazy scenes that don’t follow any rules. The film doesnt really tell a clear story in a traditional sense. Instead, it takes you on a journey full of symbols, strange characters, and moments that make you question reality. At times, I wasn’t sure what was going on, but it kept my attentions. Its not for everyone, its weird, deep, and at times disturbing but if you like movies that challenge your mind and visuals that feel like art, you might love it. Its more of an experience than a movie, and I’m still thinking about it days later. The only reason I wouldn’t give it 5 stats is because some viewers might find it too strange or hard to follow. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/20/25 Full Review Nicholas C The Holy Mountain is one the most trippiest films I have ever seen in my life. From the very beginning I was utterly confused and questioned everything that I was seeing on screen and just asked myself throughout the whole movie “what the hell am I watching?”. I’m not a huge fan of these types of films to be honest, I much rather watch a film that tells a story first, imagery second, not the other way around. I can understand why people would watch these films instead and actually have a good time if they just wanna watch trippy stuff for 2 hours but I much rather understand what I’m watching instead of guessing the whole time if I’m corrected or I’m losing my mind.
