Nicolas Rapold New York Times 09/10/2015
Nearly four hours long, "Home From Home" is imbued with the villagers' attachment to the land, but while dutifully capturing the period, the film feels less layered than Mr. Reitz's past work. Go to Full Review

For all of its evident toil in recreating historically accurate environments and researching the precise conditions in varying regions, it has little force as a work of cinema. Go to Full Review
Boyd van Hoeij The Hollywood Reporter 05/28/2015
This beautifully shot black-and-white feature is accessible even for those unfamiliar with Reitz's previous work. Go to Full Review

"Home From Home" isn't the kind of definitive post-mortem on a decade that "The Second Heimat" was, but it will speak to anyone who's ever felt trapped by their surroundings and dreamed of escape. Go to Full Review

On paper it is a yawn, especially when you clock the four-hour running time, but you will be sucked in to the lives of the characters and the mesmerising detail of their existence. Go to Full Review

The first masterpiece of 2015. Spellbinding, lyrical and breathtaking. Epic in scope while intimate in its humanism. I could have watched 4 more hours. Go to Full Review

S R @ScottR May 3 A unique German film that was magical. Although I did not see the full 15 hours of it since I only had the shortened version, I would still be open to it. It was a masterpiece despite its oddities. An excellent, detailed film that covers the transitions from the old world to the new. It was beautiful and showed many cultural issues clearly and uncomfortably. I am surprised I had not come across it before. NYT 1000 movies list and SLC DVD. See more Liam D @Mediawatcher2003 12/14/2024 It’s an incredible well acted and made film but it’s gigantic runtime is too much for me See more 09/17/2015 Epic film with alternating dark and bright moments. Views can tell the traces of Mr. Reitz's efforts to construct a historically consistent film. Four hours went over smoothly, though poetic narration needs more concentration. See more 07/19/2014 4-hour is very long for some movies but indeed not this one. Every minute of it helps to build this whole German village in its mid 19th century on the screen. Jacob, the son of a blacksmith, loved reading and dreamed the distant place, and because of this he met the girl he fell in love with. Life is always miserable. His brother eventually married the girl and went to Brazil, who never would think so. Our dreamer stayed but the dream never would fade away, The black-and-white graphic is so beautiful. Some shoot is as epic as the movie itself. See more 06/05/2014 There are movies which has to take their four hours. When that time has passed, you've got a glimpse of life. Without being bored. "Die Andere Heimat" is such an example. Prussian village in the 1840s. You can feel the moods slowly being built up. which will lead to the revolts against monarchy and aristocracy in 1848. But it's more about life conditions. In a material way so different from ours. In other ways not. It takes four hours to know people on a screen. It takes four hours to get them under your skin. It takes a director like Edgar Reitz to let you. And you will remember it for long. See more 11/12/2013 'Die Andere Heimat' verdient het om in één ruk uit te zien. Dit is een topwerk van een filmreus. See more Read all reviews
