HOME IS A HOTEL presents a composite portrait of life on the margins in the most expensive city in the country. Filmed over 5 years, this feature-length documentary looks at inequality in San Francisco through the lens of five residents as they fight to stay housed. The film features a mosaic of strangers bound together by their reliance on this system of Single Room Occupancy hotels to keep a roof over their heads and homelessness at bay. While their stories are unique, their attempts to break free of cyclical traumas and crushing structural forces is a universal story whose outcome will foretell the future of the American city.

Karly K Amazing movie - so thoughtful and moving. A must see for anyone! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/01/24 Full Review Andrew J Beautiful, stunning and amazing! Those are not adjectives I use often for entertainment, but this documentary hit really close to home. It's a verite film about residents of SROs in San Francisco in the neighborhoods of the Tenderloin, the Mission and Chinatown. I loved how this film humanized these folks and brought to the fore their beautiful stories. I was impressed by how the subjects struggle and survive in the face of almost-cruel housing costs and cost of living challenges in San Francisco. I don't know what the answer is to people living in SROs, or are dealing with homelessness, but putting a human touch and face to their narratives definitely is a good start. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/27/23 Full Review Clayton H Caught this at the Roxie in SF. This film is an extremely touching portrait of several different people trying to make the transition from "temporary" SRO housing to a more permanent voucher supported Section 8 rental units in San Francisco. Filmed over several years, the audience really gets an intimate sense of the challenges faced by the film's subjects as they navigate the many steps required to get help from very limited city resources. Definitely worth seeking out when the film finds distribution or shows up at a screening. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
