Andrea Gronvall Chicago Reader Geyrhalter piques the imagination with images of decay: towns, malls, theaters, and hospitals, all deserted, unnamed, and overrun by foliage and wildlife. Jan 5, 2017 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian For its sheer visual exaltation, this is the most extraordinary documentary I have seen in years. Rated: 5/5 Nov 21, 2016 Full Review Glenn Kenny New York Times Each individual shot creates a frisson of desolation that resonates far beyond the facile irony suggested by the movie's title. Jul 28, 2016 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Geyrhalter has created one of the most powerful cinematic wake up calls since Charlton Heston stood and cried out at the Statue of Liberty. Here, there are not even apes. Rated: 4/5 Dec 22, 2016 Full Review Benjamin Mercer Brooklyn Magazine An eerily serene whistle-stop tour of abandoned built environments. Jul 29, 2016 Full Review Louis Proyect rec.arts.movies.reviews A documentary that is far more frighteningly dystopian than any Mad Max movie because it is real. Audience Member Interesting documentary from Nikolaus Geyrhalter. He sets up cameras at abandoned places and show us material from all over the world presented in takes from 15 to one minute worth of lenght. Some short black screen cuts are letting us know that we're in a new place, otherwise we just sit there and observe without added voice or text. Beautiful, but at times sad - almost scary. It's a world without people, only the leftovers from our race. I really would like to see the location list. The nature - with it's wind and birds are our only storyteller here. It does a great job. You may create you're own stories of what's been going on, but you never know for sure. Good film, but easy to look away from at times. It demands your concentration, but a the same time, it does not kill much of the vibe to look away during the shifting scenes. 7.5 out of 10 empty rooms. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member ?????? ????????????????????????????????????????...???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????? ??????VR?????????????????? Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member 94 min of looking at webcam-like shots of abandoned buildings and man-made structures. There is neither a narrator nor is no text scrolling by. Just tens of shots lasting several secondes of overgrown, quickly abonded buildings. What is the point? Who knows? What Geyrhalter is trying to say remains unclear, as no information is shared with the viewer. More framing, knowledge and opinion exchange could have saved the movie. Critics love it. Maybe they watched a different version. Because I cannot give this movie more than a star. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member The world is a much better place without us.
