Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard Yusef's trials feel exquisitely urgent. Rated: 4/5 Jul 15, 2011 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Some of the images Kaplanoglu finds are superb: a forest, a mountainside, a rippling, pulsing moon reflected in a pool of water. It is poetic film-making. Rated: 4/5 Jul 14, 2011 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) The rhythms of the picture are as patient and fluid as other Turkish art films might lead us to expect, but a trickle of anxiety runs through it... Rated: 3/5 Jul 14, 2011 Full Review Mattie Lucas From the Front Row A fascinating mix of the studious and the artful, a strange amalgam of left and right brained filmmaking. Rated: 3/4 Aug 5, 2019 Full Review Hannah Brown Jerusalem Post As I was watching it, I had a bit of time to reflect on the elements that seem to guarantee film festival success... The less the characters talk, the better. Movies about articulate people just don't seem as profound. Mar 21, 2016 Full Review Alistair Harkness Scotsman It all feels a little generic. Audience Member Beautiful cinematography and, despite the cliches, things seem to work quite well. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member There is some beauty of the lives shot, but the film seems ultimately gratuitously sad, playing with our emotions. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Stunning cinematography, beautiful static camerawork, suppressed performances and quiet characters make this a masterpiece. Kaplanoglu is a new auteur and he creates paintings instead of shots. Every location is researched to the last bit and the movie in whole is a wonderful piece of art the likes of which we very seldom find. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Alexander W Nothing complicated, except the task of understanding life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/27/12 Full Review Audience Member I gave it 30% because after I watched it this movie made sure that I went outside to paint my gate, cut the grass, wash the car and feed the chickens......an effort to make up for the fact that I had just spent the most unproductive 1hr and 40 minutes of my life! The script is non existent and most of the movie is taken up by silence or people talking about religion. The scenery and style od direction is supposed to make up for this and form the main focus of the movie, letting the characters physical relationships tell the story???? I think not, there are tons of great movies out there with sweeping landscapes and artistic direction which makes this movie nothing more than one big yawn in comparison, from start to finish. Unless you enjoy bees swarming around a bucket and people glaring at each other, long camera shots of up to 1 minute long of someone sleeping or walking around the house in silence. Quite frankly as long as we are talking about swarming, I have had more fun watching flies swarm around a shapely turd! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
