Critics Consensus

Hooking Up highlights Sam Richardson and Brittany Snow's strengths as leads -- and their limitations when saddled with a deeply subpar script.

Cath Clarke Guardian This movie is as vanilla as they come. Rated: 2/5 Jun 3, 2020 Full Review Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle "Hooking Up" is a pretty good movie. I enjoyed it and could even imagine watching it again. But it's also the movie that shows that Snow doesn't have to be relegated to pretty good movies. She's ready for better. Rated: 3/4 Mar 25, 2020 Full Review Lisa Kennedy Variety Director Nico Raineau and co-writer Lauren Schacher hug the familiar beats of the form while rubbing up against its conventions with some naughty, sometimes endearing tweaks. Mar 22, 2020 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut Hooking Up strolls through standard rom-com clichés, the rest of the performances are phoned in, and it dully arrives at its all-too-familiar destination. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 28, 2022 Full Review Dan Bayer Next Best Picture They manage to elevate this tepid, wannabe-cool film that doesn’t deserve it. Rated: 6/10 May 13, 2022 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix In an attempt to set itself apart from other sex comedies, Hooking Up has some bizarre plot elements that actually lower the quality of this already lowbrow movie. Miranda W I don't understand the low ratings here. This movie was funny and one of the better romcoms of the last 5 years. Sure it wasn't perfect, but Sam Richardson and Brittany Snow have great chemistry. It's been a few years since this director has directed a feature, so I hope a studio takes another shot on him. I'd watch his next movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review JackieIsntGr8 I absolutely loved this movie. The characters are compelling, relatable, and realistic. It handles issues that can be delicate in a very respectful way, and gives a ton of depth to the basic "bad girl meets good guy who shows her what real love is." It's got some tooth-rotting sweet moments, but they're not constant and therefore they were cute and fun to watch as opposed to predictable and cheesy. The cast is great, and has tons of diversity that isn't just for the sake of marketing for diversity. It was the most enjoyable romantic comedy I've watched in a long time. This film is criminally underrated in my book! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/18/23 Full Review Ira C More of a personal problem what is the writer, or director or whatever have Brittany Snow sleeping a lot with black guys recently this movie then X. Hollywood we like represention but keep your black guy and white girls storylines locked up for a bit it's over saturated. Do you do realize black men like black women too right? There are a whole bunch of black women want to get their big chance it almost impossible when you're writing dumbass movie plots like this train wreck. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/21/23 Full Review matthew a Not Bad, Not Great. But the 2 made a great combo!!! Not bad overall. They could def. make you think... "I may have a chance!" Give it a look see... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Really funny and different from other Rom-Coms Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review toby h Hooking Up is a familiar modern road trip romcom. There's edgy humour and wit to fulfil your easy watch needs. Richardson and Snow have all sorts of fun here. It's worth hooking up with this one.
