It remains totally true to the Romantic genre and never pretends to be anything else. But like the old movies before scripts became less important than the stars and "ratings", it uses a strong core of drama to pull it together. A hefty dose of realism and the pain of divorce which is still relevant, hits the heart. Forrest Whittaker's direction combines the importance of "place" with poignant close-ups. It helps to be taken away to old-school towns with lush forests and shimmering heat! It's not "smaltzy" as many critics smugly ripped it.
