Although reasons can be found to call it a bad example of either of the first three, it undeniably succeeds as a piece of art.

As a cinematic rendering of the gothic, fetishistic, horrific, and sublime - erotic, grotesque nonsense - it is unparalleled.

Jogoro is no doctor, and his "dream of 30 years" is motivated not by the usual scientific hubris, but rather by a desire to fashion all humanity in his own deformed image..., and by the sheer will to realise a thoroughly demented vision.

Alternate Ending
What the film has on offer is not just the intensity of its emotions, but an endless array of creative images.

Simultaneously utterly grotesque and surreally beautiful, Teruo Ishii's sexadelic freakout is a must-see for adventurous moviegoers with a taste for the macabre.

As a piece of high trash cinema, the film emerges as something of an uncovered masterpiece.

This is an awsome horror masterpiece, but a bit outdated

Brimming with oddities and visually magnetic, Ishii's twisted take on Dr. Moreau's famous island not only succeeds as an example of Japanese cult cinema but it has a rousing mystery at its core to boot.

It's really hard to believe that the film was made in 1969, it's not only the technical side, but, the subject itself. Though this film is a Sci-Fi, nothing much of these details are discussed in the movie, it concentrates more on the dramatic aspects. Interestingly the famous poison over the thread scene from "You Only Live Twice (1967)" was adapted into this film. Must watch for those who are dying to see different kind of films.

I had been on a pretty good run with my choices in Japanese cinema. I had recommended seven movies in a row. The streak stops with this one. Not even the constant presence of exposed boobs could save it. I can't help but notice the similarities between this movie and the Ilsa movies that would begin about six years later (i.e. Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS): minimal plot, maximum sadism, really bad acting.

Kurosawa it ain't. The 100% tomato score on the site is misleading by a long shot. Way over the top acting, bad makeup and cheesy effects even for 1969. I give it 20%, for the last 20% of the movie where you can have it all wrapped up in Sherlock Holmes fashion.
