Tim Grierson Screen International Filmmaker Eli Roth tries to enliven the formula, but this sequel loses the grim surprise of the original without adding much new in terms of plotting or gory set pieces. Jul 23, 2008 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Roth's dark humor and lacerating view of human weakness sometimes suggest George Romero; what he lacks is Romero's stubborn belief in personal morality. Oct 23, 2007 Full Review Eric Kohn New York Press Sadly, the director's proven creative finesse has given way to boring self-imitation. Hostel: Part II gives us the same premise as the first film, changing genders and little else. Jul 11, 2007 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast Unfairly written off as a cheap and misogynistic cash-grab when it's actually a feminist horror film with a smart, relatable and queer final girl. Rated: 4.5/5 Dec 30, 2020 Full Review Scott Weinberg TheHorrorShow A tight-fisted slow burn that whacks you in face with two or three really horrifying sequences. Johann D. M This horror sequel written and directed by Eli Roth follows three American female art students in Rome who are directed to a Slovak village where they are eventually kidnapped and taken to a facility in which rich clients pay to torture and kill other people. While not particularly inventive plot-wise, the sequel amplifies the brutality and offers a more unsettling look into the grotesque economy behind the bloodshed—giving viewers a glimpse into the mindset of the elite who pay for such horrors. The film is undeniably sadistic and not for the faint of heart, yet it earns some narrative points for its shocking twist and a finale that serves up a darkly satisfying dose of poetic justice. An average sequel with a few sharp barbs beneath all the gore. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review babarizam D This is a terrible sequel, too Hollywood and too fake. The first was good because of unexpectancy . Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/03/25 Full Review Bruno V People have spoken so highly of this film, but in the end it's just a satire of how banal life is and a social critique. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Hugh J Although there is a significant amount of sadistic gore that will satisfy fans of the original, the storyline is lacking in that it simply replays much of the original. The only significant changes being flipping the gender roles of the main cast, and almost idiolizing the community that is actually doing these things instead of rooting for the victims. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Samm 2 Good gore scenes, the screenplay isn't very good. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/25/24 Full Review Gavin R This film was not much different from the first film, it just repeated the first one but just chaged the genders of the main characters. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Read all reviews
