Critics Consensus

Hotel Transylvania's buoyant, giddy tone may please children, but it might be a little too loud and thinly-scripted for older audiences.

Tara Brady Irish Times The characters and story, forged by six different directors and many more writers over a six-year-production stint, leave little room for Tartakovsky tricks and tics. Rated: 2/5 Oct 13, 2012 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Comedy gothic isn't exactly novel, and frankly there is a sense here of a movie coasting along on Halloween hype-marketing, without providing as many laughs and ideas as it really could have done. Rated: 2/5 Oct 11, 2012 Full Review Tom Huddleston Time Out No one does saccharine like Adam Sandler. The man can be sharp, angry and funny - but when he lays on the sweetness, it's like drowning in an avalanche of Tate & Lyle. Rated: 2/5 Oct 11, 2012 Full Review Michael Leader Den of Geek Hotel Transylvania’s monster mash is utterly hollow. Rated: 2/5 May 3, 2024 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Hotel Transylvania isn't a brilliant animated feature, but it is a consistently entertaining one with Sandler's trademark silliness mixed with sweetness. Rated: 3.0/4.0 Sep 11, 2020 Full Review Cleaver Patterson CineVue The way this collection of monster misfits tackle both each other and the threat of human invasion has the right degree of wit and sophistication to amuse adults whilst being zany and slapstick enough to hold children's attention. Rich S Even though Adam Sandler is the anchor of a cast that is buoyed by some stellar mainstays from television, full-screen motion pictures and animated films, Hotel Transylvania misses the mark. The attempt to turn everything monstrous onto human beings simply backfires because humans really are as despicable as these silly Transylvanian types that are posing as monsters. Sandler's schtick, most of all, is getting tired. His jokes are old, his songs are barely amusing and, by the end, he literally has nothing to say with his vampire character's "bleh bleh-bleh" utterances. It makes you appreciate the "Arrested Development" joke of Scott Baio's Bob Loblaw character. At least it has some thought behind it. Since I really do love and appreciate most of Sandler's efforts, I will give the film half a star for the attempt at recapturing lightning in a bottle with the airplane scene. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/10/25 Full Review Audience Member I thought it was a good movie. But it was a bit boring. Not that entertaining really. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/20/25 Full Review I Am F Cool kids movie. The second best of this series. Characters are kinda boring. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review Leaburn O A fairly average cartoon with a thin plot. A few reasonable characters but none standout. Passed the time and has no heavy moments. Watched on DVD. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review C M I love animation. I love horror, even campy horror. I couldn’t get through this. The plot feels forced and predictable, the humor forced, derivituve, and purile, the animation, frenetic to the point of exhaustion. It might entertain a kid, but there's netter stuff out there. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review David M I'm hardly the target audience, but even allowing for that this isn't a good film. It feels like it's been work-shopped to death in an inclement writers' room, where a group of executives have brainstormed 'family Halloween movie', and fed the results into a random plot generator. Is there even a plot, other than girl trying to get guy's attention? Being generous, I laughed twice. Maybe two-and-a-half times. The jokes rarely find their target, and it all lacks wit, warmth, scares, and joy. The voice cast is trying its best with the poor screenplay, but it's thin gruel. File under 'do not bother'.
