Critics Consensus

Hotel Transylvania's buoyant, giddy tone may please children, but it might be a little too loud and thinly-scripted for older audiences.

Tara Brady Irish Times The characters and story, forged by six different directors and many more writers over a six-year-production stint, leave little room for Tartakovsky tricks and tics. Rated: 2/5 Oct 13, 2012 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Comedy gothic isn't exactly novel, and frankly there is a sense here of a movie coasting along on Halloween hype-marketing, without providing as many laughs and ideas as it really could have done. Rated: 2/5 Oct 11, 2012 Full Review Tom Huddleston Time Out No one does saccharine like Adam Sandler. The man can be sharp, angry and funny - but when he lays on the sweetness, it's like drowning in an avalanche of Tate & Lyle. Rated: 2/5 May 3, 2024 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Hotel Transylvania isn't a brilliant animated feature, but it is a consistently entertaining one with Sandler's trademark silliness mixed with sweetness. Rated: 3.0/4.0 Sep 11, 2020 Full Review Cleaver Patterson CineVue The way this collection of monster misfits tackle both each other and the threat of human invasion has the right degree of wit and sophistication to amuse adults whilst being zany and slapstick enough to hold children's attention. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/29/25 Full Review Ben W. It took scary monsters and made them funny and likable. It was comfy, light, and entertaining. Grade: 59 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/05/25 Full Review The Wandering D Such a wholesome movie. I love a good father-daughter dynamic in a movie, and Hotel Transylvania has got that! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/25 Full Review Logan G. Hotel Transylvania is funny and good for kids, but later films in the series are better. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/25 Full Review Leovanni E Great Movie, I wish the franchise didn't go downhill after the first 2 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/30/25 Full Review Obedience R Recently I watched "The Last Dragon," and it's funny that I feel the same way about the movie "Hotel Transylvania," which is the latest one I watched. It's not something for those looking for something even slightly serious or frightening, even by kid's movie standards. I found it to be funny, and I got a bunch of good laughs out of it, which all I ask. The story is a little clumsy, but still interesting. When Dracula admits the truth, the movie abruptly becomes serious, so I would have preferred if they had revealed that a little sooner. However, the characters are all nuanced. Even Johnathan and Mavis are too quick to give up, so that makes them compelling. The so-so storytelling is compensated for by a interesting premise and funny animation. I recommend this for anyone who wants to see a goofy, animated comedy. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/26/25 Full Review Read all reviews
