This early slasher movie and somewhat Psycho rip-off is also an artful and unnerving gothic horror picture in its own right. [Blu-ray] Go to Full Review

Even if one guesses the gotcha moments, there’s still plenty to enjoy. Go to Full Review

Taken as a whole, the sinister and accomplished The House That Screamed is something of a classic of European horror. Go to Full Review

Blobbo X @Blobbo Nov 13 Slow, slow, slow, atmostpheric, slow slow slow. Go straight to last 10 minutes --- or skip whole thing. See more Ed . Aug 29 It wouldn't be the same without Lili Palmer. Rare horror film with class and elegance. See more Bruce M @BruceMc Jun 12 Surprisingly good. Well-directed and well-acted, terrific editing. Interesting sexual subtext as well: lesbianism, incest and sexual sadism. Apparently the original version was cut by apparently 15 minutes to make it more palatable to the ratings board, and the present version has some odd cuts and fades between scenes. Regardless, a better and more interesting movie than you probably expect. See more Dave S Apr 4 Don’t be fooled – The House That Screamed is actually much better than its silly title would lead you to believe. Senora Fourneau runs a boarding school for troubled girls in late 19th century France. When a new student arrives at the academy, she quickly realizes that something is amiss – the headmistress rules with an iron fist, the son of the headmistress is a bit of an oddball, girls periodically go missing, and the vibe around the school is more than a little offsetting. The movie establishes a decidedly creepy atmosphere thanks to excellent sets and costumes, some creative direction and cinematography, and a decent score. Where it falters is the predictable ending (although the motive for the antagonist is a surprise) and the fact that, when you look back at it, you realize that not a lot actually happens over the course of the movie, which is never a good thing.
