Philip French Guardian It has a pared down quality that invites, indeed virtually compels, the viewer to see it as some kind of allegory. Apr 23, 2011 Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) It proceeds at a dour and Russian kind of pace, mildly intriguing without ever cranking up the pressure to become compelling. Rated: 2/5 Apr 22, 2011 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian A gripping, involving and wonderfully acted piece of work. Rated: 4/5 Apr 21, 2011 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine Good character work and a painfully slow build-up combine to make Alexei Popogrebski’s 2010 thriller How I Ended This Summer a memorable success. Rated: 8/10 Oct 6, 2024 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Bleak and unfulfilling psychological thriller set at a Russian meteorological camp on a desolate island in the Arctic Circle. Rated: C+ Jan 11, 2012 Full Review Simon Weaving Screenwize A cinematic and dramatic treat, this spectacular piece of contemporary Russian filmmaking follows two meteorologists stationed on a remote Arctic island. An allegory on old and new Russia, it's part art-house thriller and part atmospheric poetry. Rated: 4/5 Jun 26, 2011 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member How I Ended This Summer is a 2010 Russian drama film directed by Alexei Popogrebski. It was in the competition for the Golden Bear at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival. Tim Robey of The Daily Telegraph gave it four stars, writing, that the director Popogrebsky "delivers a Tarkovskian parable about nuclear horror which also functions as a sustained and nail-biting psychological thriller." Vision said "How I Ended This Summer is intense, gripping and well acted by its two-man cast in a desolate Arctic setting. The compelling exploration of isolation and the tension between contrasting personalities, particularly the generational divide between the older, experienced Sergei and the younger, more technologically reliant Pavel, shows viewers what the life of a Russian artic worker is truly about. Watch out for Russian polar bears." Powerful Performances: The acting by both Grigory Dobrygin (Pavel) and Sergei Puskepalis (Sergei) is considered exceptional, effectively conveying the characters' internal struggles and the building tension between them. Intriguing Premise: The story, set on a remote Arctic island weather station, creates a sense of isolation and claustrophobia, adding depth to the psychological conflict between the two men. Subtle Tension Building: The film gradually builds tension through small details and subtle interactions, rather than relying on overt dramatic moments, making the climax all the more impactful. Exploration of Themes: The film delves into themes like personal responsibility, communication breakdowns and the impact of isolation on the human psyche. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Audience Member Unsatisfactory. Inexplicable characters and thus plot. Watch it for the scenery only. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member fantastic character-driven movie. Love these two actors. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Fierce moral drama and what a jackass of a main character. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Gurellia Film-Making At An Extra-Ordinary Level Of Isolation Bring A Desolate Northern-Russia Landscape Alive. The Slow Pace, Bizarre Story & Bland Script Pushed My Limit Of Carte-Factor. I Watched This In Two Seperate Hours & Still Found It A Real Struggle. If It Weren't For The Amazing Landscape Photography I'd Have Given It A Near Zero. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member gr8 to look at thats about it flimsy plot slowly too slowly paced and one character is in the same clothes for the whole movie-gross.
