Paul (Mathieu Amalric) is stalled in both his academic career and his romantic life. He can't bring himself to complete his dissertation, and has decided that his long-term relationship with Esther (Emmanuelle Devos) is at a dead end. More his style is Sylvia (Marianne Denicourt), who, unfortunately, happens to be engaged to his best friend.
