Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard The characters in this movie are charmers. They've got me so well-trained, I'm even looking forward to HTTYD3. Rated: 3/5 Jul 11, 2014 Full Review Leslie Felperin Radio Times It has a richness that's highly compelling, especially in the way it explores the complex relationship between man and beast. Rated: 4/5 Jul 11, 2014 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) The filmmakers borrow freely from Avatar, Sword In The Stone and even Brave but they bring enough vigour and imagination to their storytelling to get away with it. Rated: 4/5 Jul 10, 2014 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film What Dean DeBlois was able to do with the first How to Train Your Dragon was just incredible and has become big favorite of mine since then. There was some huge expectations for How to Train Your Dragon 2 and boy did Deblois deliver. Rated: A Aug 19, 2024 Full Review Brendan Cassidy InSession Film Boasting beautiful animation, a great script, wonderful voice talent, and one of the year’s best musical scores, this earns its dragon’s wings buy not only improving on its predecessor, but it makes the first film even better. Jun 17, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Being at once a self-contained story and a continuation of a franchise that betters and grows more intricate than what came before, the film meets all the requirements of a great sequel. Allie F I really loved the first movie - there were so many memorable parts! It felt like this one took a bit to warm up to things, and the sense of awe and cuteness didn't quite hit me as much as in the first movie. But still lovable and entertaining! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/22 Full Review Kevin P A fantastic sequel that matures its characters and expands the world and themes. It's satisfying watching the characters grow from their previous character arcs. Everyone still accepts dragons, but now there's an invading force that threatens their new peaceful coexistence by Kidnapping dragons for their own army, contrasted by a new mysterious figure who rescues dragons to a secret wildlife sanctuary and holds special ties to Hiccup. I was in awe watching this movie. The flight sequences are just as exciting as the original, with new updates like Hiccup's new gliding suit and his badass flame sword. The movie is gorgeously animated with such scenic and colorful landscapes that elevated the film to such a grand scale. The film also introduces a lot of cool concepts like alpha dragons, ice-breathing dragons, and hypnotic control of dragons turning against their owners in surprisingly horrific ways with a clever proxy tactic by controlling dragons though controlling the alpha. (SPOILERS) Hiccup's mother Valka is a great addition, with her biologist animal lover passion clearly being a missing link with Hiccup's divergence from his father. There are some great dramatic payoffs between the reuniting of Hiccup's parents and it's genuinely touching and tear-jerking. Thematically, there is a great contrast of training dragons through fear, domination, and negative reinforcement with Drago vs with empathy, mutualism, and positive reinforcement with Hiccup and Valka. The climactic final battles is huge in scope and easily one of Dreamwork's best. It's gigantic in scale and leaves some devastating consequences highlighted by the great line "Good dragons controlled by bad people can do terrible things". My only complaint is super minor with the celebrity side characters being a tad annoying at times, and Astrid getting less screentime. But everything else is amazing, making this easily one of Dreamwork's best Sequels and on-par with the original HTTYD. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/25 Full Review PEKING D An animation that I accept and love, it will be another story that will be kept in our memories and in the hearts of viewers like us. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/05/25 Full Review Kayleigh S Better than the first. I'm not a big fan but I really enjoy the movies. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/03/25 Full Review Aidan W. Somehow the crew behind these movies elevated it to new heights with this first sequel which caught me completely off guard because I thought the first film was near perfect. Direct sequels are a difficult egg to crack but wow this film does it and then some! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/02/25 Full Review John D Most sequels aren't as good as the original movie. But this proves that statement wrong. This movie is really good! Heck, maybe even better than the original! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/25 Full Review Read all reviews
