      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

While Ang Lee's ambitious film earns marks for style and an attempt at dramatic depth, there's ultimately too much talking and not enough smashing.

Samrat M Hollywood critics panned this film because they didn't quite know what to do with a superhero film that was a dramatic story of epic proportions at the same time. Christopher Nolan saw promise in this approach to superhero dramatisation and landed Batman Begins two years later in 2005 and he was lucky that the critics didn't pan his film! I saw this film again in 2024 and it still blows me away and probably marvel studios know that which is why they never made another Hulk movie (the one with Edward Norton missed the emotional intensity). While most of Marvel's recent films have been commercially successful none of them have a recall value like this one! Highly recommend for rewatching. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review Zinjx W Actually not bad, but it is true that it takes forever before the film starts. Bana is ok as Banner, while Nolte is downright excellent as the unscrupulous father. A good climax rounds off a somewhat uneven film, but there is more for the little grays than you are used to in this type of film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review VibesByLuxury Haven't revisited this film since I was a kid, and it still remains my favorite Hulk adaptation. The psychological trauma that Bruce deals with from his past with his father, and the inner battle he has with Hulk is truly what makes him a great character. Often misunderstood as well. The Incredible Hulk (2008) was such a bore to me and don't even get me started with what the MCU has done to the character. I'll always love this film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review ADjustinG2013 The tones clash between rage, campiness, goofiness, and charm. You can feel the Hulk's emotions at all times. While the action is good for its time, the cgi looks both impressive and cartoonish in a contradicting mesh. The comicbook style is distracting but keeps the pace moving. The soundtrack can be very dream-like at times and the theme fits well, almost unforgettable. Very mixed bag. 2008's soft reboot may be a better movie, but this one somehow has a hint more appeal to the eye. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review Jacob T It's A Great Film allot of people bashed on it when it first came out but it's a Great movie about overcoming trauma. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review James B I actually like this film but the CGI wasn't great and the hulk does look baby faced but other than that it's a solid movie Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Chris Bennion Times (UK) Lee’s take on Bruce Banner — the scientist you won’t like when he’s angry (played by Eric Bana) — stands up rather well as a counterpoint to today’s CGI-drenched behemoths. Apr 10, 2024 Full Review Joshua Rothkopf In These Times I ask you: Is this not the correct way, the honorable way, for a studio to spend $150 million of its summer capital? Universal said The Hulk, and Lee heard something else, perhaps a story of dysfunctional families torn apart by ambition. Mar 16, 2020 Full Review Namrata Joshi Outlook Even if Lee would have wanted to rise above the simple two-dimensional universe of the comic books, his portrayal remains just as flat. Rated: 2/4 Jan 4, 2019 Full Review Joseph Garcia Dynamic Duel Podcast The film's artistic ambition, psychological explorations, and fun action get largely lost in its unnecessarily long runtime and unconventional editing style. Rated: 3/5 Mar 6, 2024 Full Review David Reddish MovieWeb For audiences ever fatigued by superhero movies cranked out like fast food, Hulk tastes like gourmet cuisine. Time has been kind to Hulk. Today, a movie often cited as one of the worst of its genre plays a lot more like one of the best. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 30, 2023 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Hulk has long been a misunderstood film but it's a very different type of comic book movie and should be reappraised as such.
