Critics Consensus

While Ang Lee's ambitious film earns marks for style and an attempt at dramatic depth, there's ultimately too much talking and not enough smashing.

Lee’s take on Bruce Banner — the scientist you won’t like when he’s angry (played by Eric Bana) — stands up rather well as a counterpoint to today’s CGI-drenched behemoths. Go to Full Review

I ask you: Is this not the correct way, the honorable way, for a studio to spend $150 million of its summer capital? Universal said The Hulk, and Lee heard something else, perhaps a story of dysfunctional families torn apart by ambition. Go to Full Review

Even if Lee would have wanted to rise above the simple two-dimensional universe of the comic books, his portrayal remains just as flat. Go to Full Review

The film's artistic ambition, psychological explorations, and fun action get largely lost in its unnecessarily long runtime and unconventional editing style. Go to Full Review

For audiences ever fatigued by superhero movies cranked out like fast food, Hulk tastes like gourmet cuisine. Time has been kind to Hulk. Today, a movie often cited as one of the worst of its genre plays a lot more like one of the best. Go to Full Review

Hulk has long been a misunderstood film but it's a very different type of comic book movie and should be reappraised as such. Go to Full Review

Hayden H Nov 2 Eric Bana not bad but odd Marvel film See more tommy J Oct 5 It exists. Its ok, its not great. See more William W Sep 29 It’s even worse than a parody movie. Extremely slow and sluggish. Filled with incredibly long and dull dialogues… See more Paul S Sep 14 Never have I seen such a blatant abuse of split-screens in a movie. This felt more like a sci-fi thriller rather than a superhero movie, and there were a lot of aspects of the movie that just didn't make sense. Despite its flaws, there were a lot of really awesome action scenes in this movie, and I believe that some of the Hulk's best live-action capabilities are displayed here. This movie was really enjoyable, but it wasn't as good as The Incredible Hulk from 2008. I definitely recommend it for superhero fans! See more Jorge R @jlrtechno Aug 26 (Yawns)🥱 i’m sorry. Wake me up when “HULK” does some smashing! See more Jens B Aug 20 While there's always something happening visually—for example, Ang Lee decided to add an absurd fade to almost every cut to simulate reading a comic (which works to a certain extent), the actual plot is stagnant. Beyond that, it's incredibly uninteresting. As a viewer, I wasn't invested at all. But I've never been able to connect with Hulk either. The 'fun' of this film was the half-minute anticipation of the next bizarre directing/editing decision, which doesn't make the two-hour runtime any more bearable. See more Read all reviews
