Critics Consensus

While Ang Lee's ambitious film earns marks for style and an attempt at dramatic depth, there's ultimately too much talking and not enough smashing.

Chris Bennion The Times (UK) Lee’s take on Bruce Banner — the scientist you won’t like when he’s angry (played by Eric Bana) — stands up rather well as a counterpoint to today’s CGI-drenched behemoths. Apr 10, 2024 Full Review Joshua Rothkopf In These Times I ask you: Is this not the correct way, the honorable way, for a studio to spend $150 million of its summer capital? Universal said The Hulk, and Lee heard something else, perhaps a story of dysfunctional families torn apart by ambition. Mar 16, 2020 Full Review Namrata Joshi Outlook Even if Lee would have wanted to rise above the simple two-dimensional universe of the comic books, his portrayal remains just as flat. Rated: 2/4 Jan 4, 2019 Full Review Joseph Garcia Dynamic Duel Podcast The film's artistic ambition, psychological explorations, and fun action get largely lost in its unnecessarily long runtime and unconventional editing style. Rated: 3/5 Mar 6, 2024 Full Review David Reddish MovieWeb For audiences ever fatigued by superhero movies cranked out like fast food, Hulk tastes like gourmet cuisine. Time has been kind to Hulk. Today, a movie often cited as one of the worst of its genre plays a lot more like one of the best. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 30, 2023 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Hulk has long been a misunderstood film but it's a very different type of comic book movie and should be reappraised as such. M B Brilliant, amazingly cast and very well made comic book movie from the master Ang Lee. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/10/25 Full Review Priscilla G Esse é muito legal mas a batalha final eu não gostei muito e eu não sei porque vocês acham esse filme tão horrível Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/10/25 Full Review Austin C Terrible. Just terrible. Other Hulk movie was like this, too Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/09/25 Full Review Matheus F Nolte and Bana save the movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/09/25 Full Review Aaron A I don't get why people don't like this movie. I mean It's not the greatest Hulk movie, but they tried it and it was the most comic accurate Hulk. The Green was too much but the regeneration was accurate. All in all not a bad movie and it deserves more love. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/07/25 Full Review Alberto S I could have write this years ago, but why not now. This is going to be the best Hulk movie ever made. An incredible origin and phsycollogical story. Eric Bana made an increible role as Bruce Banner as everyone in the cast made their part perfectly good. Ang Lee made an absolutely good job bringing Hulk to the big screen and I would have love a sequel, even if this movie works very good as stand alone. He was the only who understood Hulk's character and Bruce, not to mention how good treatment had Ross and Betty in this film. I've been watching this movie for years and still being amazing. Thanks Ang Lee and Eric, Jennifer, Sam, Josh, Nick for this movie. It deserved so much more. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/23/25 Full Review Read all reviews
