HUMANE takes place over a single day, mere months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth's population. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman has invited his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation's new euthanasia program. But when the father's plan goes horribly awry, tensions flare and chaos erupts among his children.

Critics Consensus

Humane's twisted psychological thrills are diverting enough in the moment to distract from its occasionally awkward attempts to balance sociopolitical commentary against high-concept horror.

John Anderson Wall Street Journal Hardcore horror fans will get their dose of mayhem from Humane, though in its modest, tidily organized fashion the film might also get under the skin. Jul 25, 2024 Full Review Sergio Burstein Los Angeles Times Beyond the lack of subtlety of the message and the lack of depth of the characters, Cronenberg manages to make the proceedings entertaining and handles the actions well within this unique environment. [Full review in Spanish] May 7, 2024 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Variety Cronenberg treats the mansion as an enormous stage set, turning “Humane” into a kind of psychodramatic slasher movie. Apr 29, 2024 Full Review Beth Accomando KPBS.org It is a masterfully calibrated film, a slow burn but well worth the pay off. Dec 19, 2024 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews Humane‘s overall impact is adversely affected by a wheel-spinning midsection and final third emphasizing the characters’ less-than-enthralling cat-and-mouse exploits... Avindu G Sizzling outside the scar is people's skin in sun's raw light while the poor stand in queue with UV repellent umbrellas this is enough to justify the project but the twist loose it's hype cause of the confinement. If unrestrained the story would have had many avenues to go about. And the siblings rivalry was too sweet for the tone previously set. Decent visuals and audio effects. Unique set of characters with contrasting personalities. Story's critique on extreme consumerism and government's incapability amidst a crisis is the true horror in this prophesy. So there's a story to enjoy and a theme about which we should come to a sense. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review Ocean Spirit n Is a great horror thriller, with some decent acting by a couple of well known actors and then some familiar faces thrown in. Dystopian, with realistic slasher moments and the cronenberg body horror we expect from the cronenberg movie making family. Short film at a hour and a half that explores social issues while running in place and not quite exploring the ideas enough for many. Showing some extremely disturbing family dynamics that many will unfortunately find relatable. This 2024 Canadian dystopian horror film is worth the watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Jeffrey P Fans of the sub-genres involved should appreciate it enough to get through it, and the very plausible horror aspect is definitely a presence. The main fault is a lack of greater consequences despite the dire world of the characters who fail to elicit any empathy for their plight in that world. It never felt like it was going any place or like any surprising twists would happen, and it didn’t and there weren’t. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Hugh J Using the current ecological crisis as its backdrop, Humane, presents a terrifyingly real depiction of the potential dystopian extremes that humanity is hurtling towards and the further dystopian extremes that may be required if humanity continues to ignore them. Although, it does seem to have difficulty at times choosing a path between drama, comedy, and horror. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review djangles m Wanted to be politically and socioeconomically conscious, then didn't. Then wanted to be again, the whole time ruining a great premise for a movie. Feel bad for the actors because they deserved better. Never left a review before but was genuinely disappointed by what could have been. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Harris T Great cast and premise, but falls apart after the first death. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/20/24 Full Review Read all reviews
