Critics Consensus

Humane's twisted psychological thrills are diverting enough in the moment to distract from its occasionally awkward attempts to balance sociopolitical commentary against high-concept horror.

John Anderson Wall Street Journal Hardcore horror fans will get their dose of mayhem from Humane, though in its modest, tidily organized fashion the film might also get under the skin. Jul 25, 2024 Full Review Sergio Burstein Los Angeles Times Beyond the lack of subtlety of the message and the lack of depth of the characters, Cronenberg manages to make the proceedings entertaining and handles the actions well within this unique environment. [Full review in Spanish] May 7, 2024 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Variety Cronenberg treats the mansion as an enormous stage set, turning “Humane” into a kind of psychodramatic slasher movie. Apr 29, 2024 Full Review Cameron Ritter Geek Vibes Nation Humane is a steady, if uninspiring, debut from Caitlin Cronenberg that has a lot to offer visually and an interesting world set up around the main story but doesn’t quite put many of the other pieces together. Rated: 5.5/10 Jul 20, 2025 Full Review John Daniel Tangalin The Cinema Spot Caitlin Cronenberg and Michael Sparaga almost satirize the modern world as we know it. What makes it a horror film lies in the horror of truth, which is that more people are dying than one would come to realize. Rated: 4/5 Jul 18, 2025 Full Review Samantha Schuster Cinéfilo Serial A film that blends earthly horror with a family drama to explore the consequences of climate change and the role societies play in its development. A critique of human misery with an atmosphere filled with tension and surprise. [Full Review in Spanish] Rated: 4/5 Jul 18, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Murray C Entertaining dystopian satire wikth an intriguing premise and some excellent darkly comic performances, notably from Bob, the principal antagonist. If the social commentary occasionally misfires and some of the direction is a bit clumsy, that's OK. Its an enjoyable beat-em-up romp through one family's nightmare scenario in an all-too-believable near future. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/13/25 Full Review Jc B As of writing date. ..77% rating? Really? Bad characters. Bad dialogues. Bad plot movement. Bad emotional development. Unsympathetic story development and characters. Unaliving people because of ...shortages. And the studio and/or writer decided to focus on a family with dumb interactions with each other AS pretentious musical scores blast on the background. Bro/sis...wtf. Couldve just given the money spent for this piece of crap to feed the poor. The irony. Who tf created those ratings for this dumbly and lack-of-life-experience-and-emotional-connection written movie. Did I mention that this should be nominated for all the Raspberry categories? Why am I so agitated? Because bad scripts are annoying and time-wasters. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/07/25 Full Review Connie F An interesting premise and slightly thought-provoking, but it's only the performances of an exceptional cast that makes this movie worth staying to the ending, which, by the way, seems written by someone with no understanding of human nature. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/27/25 Full Review S R Interesting story with excellent surprises. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Shanna H It had it's quirks but I thought it was quite interesting. Sebastian Chacon did real great as his role of Noah, he was definitely my favorite character. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/05/25 Full Review Audience Member Not sure how this film got so many outstanding reviews. It wasn’t the worst but definitely not the best. The acting was alright and the premise was unique but there was a glaring plot hole I couldn’t get over. The execution was a bit rushed (I usually like a tighter quick film) but some of the dark humour lands home. It’s alright for a watch if you have nothing else to do but it is far from a perfect film.
