Critics Consensus

While not as innovative as its title, Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person offers a dark-ish comedic take on a teen love story between misfits that renders a strangely sweet bite.

Cath Clarke Guardian All round the film has less bite than you’d expect. But it’s stylishly shot by first-timer Louis-Seize, a bit reminiscent of an early Jim Jarmusch movie with its deadpan sense of humour, never trying too hard, just a little bit too cool for school. Rated: 3/5 Oct 9, 2024 Full Review Lauren Coates Chicago Reader This French vampire dramedy may not be groundbreaking, but its strong leads and dry humor make it well worth watching. Jul 10, 2024 Full Review Rendy Jones RogerEbert.com A charming, dark, comedic romp for a new generation that is a welcoming new branch to the vampire cinema tree. Rated: 3/4 Jun 22, 2024 Full Review Milana Vujkov Lola On Film A dented but delightful genre upgrade, steering the archetypal tale of undead bloodsuckers into comfortable Addams Family territory — then radicalising it with a daring Nietzschean twist. Rated: 3/5 Nov 30, 2024 Full Review Jason Shawhan Nashville Scene Sasha getting her fangs is very relatable to anyone who spent years at the mercy of biochemistry and autonomic nervous responses. Nov 8, 2024 Full Review Margot Harrison Seven Days (VT) But the acting, script and cinematography still make Humanist Vampire an experience perfect for anyone whose gothic whimsy itch wasn't sufficiently scratched by Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Kevin Hilarious and original! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/29/24 Full Review Anton Best movie of the year so far Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/22/24 Full Review Alex K I appreciate the unique idea on a generically one dimensional thought when it comes to vampire content. it also provided a plot that you're unsure where it will end up, and it came together nicely. It touches on a lot of moral topics, but I'm unsure how deep it actually gets into any of them. Although it is categorized as a teenager, vampire, romance type of movie, I would consider it a dark comedy with a touch of heartfeltness. I have already recommended it to a few friends. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/10/24 Full Review Richard L Extremely stylish and well-shot, hitting just the right atmosphere for a film like this, Humanist Vampire is much more than just a 'vampire themed teen romance'. In fact, it's not all that vampire themed, and not all that romantic. But it's all the more memorable for it. The ending is slightly disappointing for its Hollywoodism, but that can't put a damper on things. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/04/24 Full Review Vito P This is one of the typical stories I like: a dark, charismatic protagonist reflecting on personal growth, in this case with a dash of humour to lighten the tone. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/05/24 Full Review Fong Kok Hoong F A teenage vampiress with an arrested development to kill and a lonely bully victim with perpetually suicidal thoughts make perfect coupling in this darkly sweet horror slash romance slash comedy that could aspire to give hope in the epidemic of juvenile loneliness and isolation.
