Critics Consensus

While not as innovative as its title, Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person offers a dark-ish comedic take on a teen love story between misfits that renders a strangely sweet bite.

Cath Clarke Guardian All round the film has less bite than you’d expect. But it’s stylishly shot by first-timer Louis-Seize, a bit reminiscent of an early Jim Jarmusch movie with its deadpan sense of humour, never trying too hard, just a little bit too cool for school. Rated: 3/5 Oct 9, 2024 Full Review Lauren Coates Chicago Reader This French vampire dramedy may not be groundbreaking, but its strong leads and dry humor make it well worth watching. Jul 10, 2024 Full Review Rendy Jones RogerEbert.com A charming, dark, comedic romp for a new generation that is a welcoming new branch to the vampire cinema tree. Rated: 3/4 Jun 22, 2024 Full Review Leonardo Garcia Tsao La Jornada The idea of a reluctant vampire refusing to bite its victims isn't original... And certainly Louise-Seize and her co-writer Christine Doyon fail to come up with any new or clever variations on the premise... Kevin Hilarious and original! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/29/24 Full Review Anton Best movie of the year so far Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/22/24 Full Review Dani G Very original and less comedic than what I expected. A fresh proposal on the genre Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/03/25 Full Review Kevin L I quite enjoyed this one. Most of the credit goes to director/co-writer Ariane Louis-Seize and her well-chosen lead Sara Montpetit as Sasha. Nice bit of casting in Montpetit as she brings a quite confidence to the role of an anything but confident teen vampire who can't even get her fangs to make an appearance. But she is a 'humanist vampire. Or is that just a convenient cover? Add in her second in teen angst, Félix-Antoine Bénard, as Paul, and you have quite the miserable pair. Benard verges on overplaying it as the oddball wallflower, but gets better as his character is developed more as the film goes along. I ended up very much pulling for Paul and Sasha. Misfits as they are, with Paul being bullied and Sasha getting a hard time from her family for not helping out with the hunting. But wait, she has compassion for human suffering? There's some funny bits to go along with the generally light tone. That tone works very well with the comedic element and these characters. Key to some of the funnier moments is Noémie O'Farrell as Sasha's cousin Denise, who has no issues or problems w/ doing some hunting and feeding while riding Sasha for her inneffectual nature. O'Farrell shows a natural skill with dark comedy, both in how to deliver a line that's funny and physical comedy. Good fun this one- 3.3 stars Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/17/25 Full Review Alejandro E Another example that big things come in small packages. With no big budget and little-known actors, it combines the vampire genre with comedy in an ingenious way. An excellent choice for a weekend. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/28/25 Full Review Roberto T Really great concept but it took long to get going. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Read all reviews
