Audience Member I feel that as a romantic comedy that's charming and inoffensive, "Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania" is a cinematic equivalent of a frothy dalgona coffee. It's deliciously mounted and earnestly written screenplay is nothing but an unapologetic celebration of the effortless chemistry which it's terrifically performative leads Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan share. And in keeping to the traditions of this year, in Alia Bhatt's Kavya Pratap we have a yet anothe rendition of a quirky, charming and bold female lead with a distinctive voice: she is less independent than the chirpy Rani from 'Queen' and less equivocal to her male lover than Veera from 'Highway', and less feisty or headstrong than Meeta from 'Hasee Toh Phasee', but she's way more than a pay-off version to the bound, demure Simran: this is a wacky, and possibly the best refreshing nod to Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge, frequently disarming us with it's charming romance and hilarious comedy. However the film comes with it's own troubles: there's the curse of second half. While the screenplay still intactly holds more room for it's humour, the sentimental track is too overstated and over-reached. Ashutosh Rana's diluted villainy doesn't help and hardly matches Amrish Puri. But the minor nigglings aside, this is a cheesy, but too much energized and engaging romcom that's equal parts solid and stupid. I came out of my cinema screen with a smile on my face, assured it's one of the best Hindi films of the year, worth even repeat viewing (It can be watched on Netflix). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Sweet story, fun cast, and perfectly happy ending. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Good for a time pass. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Very bollywood, and definitely a DDLJ wannabe.. The attempt was still a good one, but the movie could have been better with a renewed storyline.. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Humpty is unabashedly trying to be a modern DDLJ, which is an impossible task but does provide in keeping it interesting in the second half. Alia is particularly entertaining. The premise of the competitor being a Mr Perfect is novel and persisted well. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Ben Kenigsberg New York Times The film is earnest, formulaic and sentimental. But, like Humpty, it has enough charm to wear down defenses. Jul 14, 2014 Full Review Read all reviews
