Critics Consensus

Much like the submarine in its story, Hunter Killer cruises the murky action depths, following a perfunctory course into territory that's been charted many times before.

Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) Once all this starts coming together, Hunter Killer is absorbing, even if Marsh and his screenwriters never pretend to be half as interested in their characters as they are in the submarines. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture It's nice to spend a couple of hours in a fictional world where we don't have to worry about the American president doing something ruinously idiotic and evil. It plays like a nostalgic fairy tale. Oct 29, 2018 Full Review Robert Daniels 812filmreviews [You'll] find more enjoyment watching a plastic yellow submarine sink to the bottom of a bathtub than watching this film. Rated: 1.5/4 Oct 28, 2018 Full Review Ian Kane Epoch Times With its blend of geopolitical intrigue and action, “Hunter Killer” is sure to satisfy genre fans. Rated: 3.5/5 May 1, 2024 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com a beefy Tom Clancy-type thriller that takes no prisoners Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2022 Full Review Dara Khan Mediaversity Reviews Military stories in particular have long gotten away with total homogeneity, but the U.S. military is much more diverse than Hunter Killer suggests. David M Primo movie. Most of the reviewers obviously have their heads where the sun don’t shine! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review Ralph R Hunter Killer jumps straight into action with little time for character development, which can be a hit or miss depending on what you're looking for. The plot is straightforward but packed with tension, keeping the pace tight throughout. While it doesn't dive deep into its characters, there are small moments like the archery scene that try to add some depth. The directing keeps things engaging, and the cinematography does a solid job of capturing the intensity of underwater warfare, though some CGI moments are not perfect. The acting is commendable, with Gerard Butler delivering a dependable performance, but nothing groundbreaking. The script holds the movie together, balancing the tactical aspects with the action-heavy sequences. The sound design and score work well to enhance the tension, adding to the overall thrill. It is not a film that reinvents the genre, but it knows what it is. An action-packed military thriller that delivers on suspense and spectacle. If you are in the mood for something that keeps the adrenaline going without overcomplicating things, Hunter Killer does the job. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Romulo C I am from Brazil and I don't know a lot about American military. I can't say this movie is accurate regarding submarine and military issues, but I can say it is rather entertaining. In fact, after 30 minutes I was rooting for the good guys. You might root for who stands for the good ones and even ask who they are. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/25 Full Review Seth K Good movie, better than I expected. Gerard Butler always good and does a fine job here. I'm not a very big fan of submarine movies but I found this one to be suspenseful all the way through. Thumbs up. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/23/24 Full Review SuYun W I’ve officially stopped relying on RT critics to tell me what movies are good and what movies are trash. This was a superb movie in every way. Suspense, feel-good ending… what’s not to like? I’ll tell you what- critics who give movies like The Substance a better rating than Hunter Killer…. you & people who respect your terrible opinions on films, are what’s wrong with the world… Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Brad M It's seemed like it had a high budget with cool effects, but it came off as cheesy. The acting was bad by some of the cast. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
