Olivia Popp Cineuropa 10/21/2024
The filmmaker’s topical critique of patriarchy, hierarchy and conformity ends up being rather one-dimensional. It’s hunt or be hunted, says Gyllenstierna (quite literally, in the dialogue as well)–but the motivations to hunt at all are left up in the air. Go to Full Review

This intimate and gorgeous study of unchecked and wild male ego could have supplied more food for thought, but what it does say — typically through imagery rather than words — is, nevertheless, compelling. Go to Full Review

Gyllenstierna’s emphasis is more on the threat of violence than the violence itself, and yet HUNTERS ON A WHITE FIELD has an emotional and visceral impact equal to many more explicit genre films. Go to Full Review

Director Sarah Gyllenstierna navigates the film's journey from its comfortable setup into much darker, suspenseful terrain, building a provocative, foreboding atmosphere where anything can happen, but it probably won't be good for everyone. Go to Full Review

Debut feature writer/director Sarah Gyllenstierna has a sure hand with macho men and themes in adapting a story of three guys' hunting party's rituals for killing and butchering as a societal allegory about prey. Sounds and close-ups increase tension. Go to Full Review

Christopher H Mar 21 Hunters on the Whitefield' is a painfully pretentious and agonizingly slow-burn attempt at artistic cinema. Laden with pseudo-intellectual themes of psychosomatic tension and patriotic bloodlust, the film fails to deliver anything beyond boredom and discomfort. Its supposed exploration of the hunter-prey dynamic is obscured by a laughable transformation of a city slicker into an 'alpha killer.' Cringe-inducing scenes and aimless symbolism, like the baffling worm sequence, further contribute to its overall failure. One particularly unsettling scene, where three grown men roll around together in a berry bush for no apparent reason, adds to the film's confusing and off-putting atmosphere. With undertones of ambiguous sexual tension and violence, 'Hunters on the Whitefield' is a self-indulgent mess that leaves much to be desired. See more Read all reviews
