Critics Consensus

Sinking in with as much baleful bite as its namesake, Hyena offers a dark, stylish, and impressively gritty addition to the British crime genre.

Nick Schager Village Voice Hyena's convoluted tale is given a fresh coat of grime by Johnson's direction, which favors handheld cinematography -- often tracking its protagonists from behind -- that gives the action a pseudo-vrit ruggedness. May 1, 2015 Full Review Peter Sobczynski RogerEbert.com I suspect that anyone who actually makes it to the bitter end will be enraged by what it does and does not contain. Rated: 1.5/4 May 1, 2015 Full Review Martin Tsai Los Angeles Times "Hyena" feels like a throwback to the tough-as-nails British gangster flicks of the 1970s. Apr 30, 2015 Full Review Nick Levine NME (New Musical Express) This nasty horror sucks you into a grisly world of duplicitous cops and brutish criminals prepared to butcher anyone who gets in their way. Rated: 3/5 Apr 29, 2021 Full Review C.H. Newell Father Son Holy Gore Gritty, hypnotic, drenched in neon lights and shadow, Hyena is a tour-de-force, both as a whole and in terms of Peter Ferdinando's performance. Rated: 5/5 May 4, 2019 Full Review Ed Frankl CineVue Johnson is adept at carrying all the baggage that come with such a meaty thriller, and the concluding tragedy comes across with a novelistic sensibility. Rod M Loved the violence and the end makes complete sense in that he finally has no way out of his mess.He puts up a fight with his own denial.Loved the arrogance, karma and brutality of this great movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/25/23 Full Review Bruce K It's British! What more can I say! Was expecting better from them. Similar to many of their cop shows. Not a bad movie. Recommended for a afternoon and early night film. Good date movie if your girlfriend ain't the rom-com type. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/28/22 Full Review Audience Member It's a dichotomy of slow and listless vs. fast-paced and thrilling. It feels very much like the behind-camera team lacked experience, and felt that corny, cliched character traits and plain, boring camerawork would be fine. That's the first hour sorted. THEN we change gear, and hit a whole other level of storytelling that sees it evolve into a gritty, fresh, indie thriller Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Brian R what the kind of ending????? good movie, good plot, good acting, good everything except the ending. better off if a random person died, a politician lost an election and some got in a fender bender than this. they leave you hanging like a bugger during flu season Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/23/21 Full Review Audience Member Terrible ending spoils movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty standard police drama Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/13/20 Full Review Read all reviews
