Eugenio (Giancarlo Giannini) is a man with Down syndrome, but he's independent; he lives in a large rural house, takes care of his brother, Federico (Jacques Perrin), and also volunteers at a local hospital. He gets a shock when he sees Laura (Chiara de Bonis), a new patient and car accident victim who also happens to be the daughter of Eugenio's long-lost first love, Elena (Giuliana de Sio). When Elena shows up for a hospital visit, Eugenio must confront painful memories of rejection.
