Katie Walsh Los Angeles Times "I Am Another You" is a remarkably sensitive and lovely portrait of an individual, a family, and a life that shines an uncommonly humane light on the issues of mental illness and homelessness. Nov 19, 2018 Full Review Alan Scherstuhl Village Voice An excellent, intuitive study of American wanderlust. Sep 28, 2017 Full Review Godfrey Cheshire RogerEbert.com So absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that's also a detective story. Rated: 4/4 Sep 27, 2017 Full Review Luke Gorham In Review Online [Nanfu sets] up a far more multifaceted and affecting portrait of privilege and mental illness than the documentary's early quixotic point of view would have you anticipate. Aug 13, 2020 Full Review Elissa Suh MUBI Over-narrating and explicating his charisma in lieu of showing it, Wang's undertaking of roughing it in Florida proves unpalatable, difficult, and a bit problematic-though the film's third act will soon reveal why. Feb 28, 2020 Full Review Phil Guie Film-Forward.com I Am Another You is a thoughtful meditation on how an individual's inner and outer selves can differ profoundly, and how we can be acquainted with somebody for years but not really know them at all. Audience Member An interesting take on how much mental illness is so often a base reason for homelessness and other states of instability. For all the talk of 'freedom', 'living off the grid', 'seeking grand answers', etc., so much of that just seems like a mask, a basic denial of their reality, or a quick way to dismiss or shrug off the questions people may have for them. I'm glad Wang went back to this story and found Dylan again, this time with his family, to put things into a fuller context. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member At first he is portrayed as a symbol of freedom and independent thinking, as well as a non-conformist and a role model..... And then it's revealed he is an alcoholic with mental issues.... Very common for homeless people, I feel bad for him but an 1 1/2 hrs documentary just for him is too much!! It should be 20 mins. Long max Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review diane h At first I thought Dylan was self-indulgent. As a homeless kid, he was treated well by most people because he was a young, blonde, good-looking, intelligent guy who appeared affable. After hearing his story, I could see that he wasn't self indulgent so much as self-medicating, and my heart went out to him. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member wow is all I can say. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Meh. Not bad. But, certainly not worthy of 100%. The filmmaker is clearly a tourist in the reality that is homelessness and mental illness. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/04/18 Full Review Audience Member This just aired on KLRU 1/29/18. I had no preconceptions about this film as I'd never heard the title, let alone seen a description or a review. It caught my attention quickly and took me on a journey along with the film maker that I had not been anticipating. Too much of a decription gives too much of the film so I can only hope others will see it. The film maker does join Dylan on the streets to explore homelessness, and things start out rather upbeat. But later on, you feel the pain of those affected by his "choice". I plan on showing it to others, including my 15 yr old daughter. Heartbreaking.
