Alexandra Heller-Nicholas The Blue Lenses Slow and determinedly poised ... I am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House is ... an acquired taste, but its rejection of predictable ten-minute cyclic jump-scares [and] perkily inquisitive adolescents ... make it a quiet, unsettling delight. Aug 25, 2018 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com An atmospheric take on the haunted house flick that works more with dread and the looming specter of death than the traditional tropes that often define the genre. Rated: 3/4 Oct 28, 2016 Full Review A.A. Dowd AV Club Can a horror movie get by on nothing but atmosphere, on the the je ne sais quoi of its unsettling mood? I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House suggests that maybe it can. Rated: B+ Oct 27, 2016 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Combustible Celluloid It's an ethereal, dreamlike, malleable movie, almost in the experimental vein, unconcerned with a linear explanation of events. Ghosts are in charge here. Rated: 3.5/4 Jul 12, 2024 Full Review Jordy Sirkin Jordy Reviews It Atmosphere in this film is superb, and there’s a great Gothic, moody presence throughout that I was certainly a fan of. Though, I felt it supported itself solely on that, with the tension never really riding a wave towards an effective result. Feb 22, 2023 Full Review Jason Shawhan Nashville Scene I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives in the House is the slowest of slow-burn ghost stories (featuring the return to cinema of the incomparable Paula Prentiss after ages) about a young woman working as a caregiver and attendant for a reclusive novelist. Khang P This some bullshit lol Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Steve F While the film ultimately ends up feeling a bit "ho-hum" .. it's worth the watch to see Osgood Perkins' beginning as a filmmaker. The opening scenes are creepy and atmospheric and you can see even from the get-go his mastery of the slow-burn style of dread horror. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/30/24 Full Review Kevin S The atmosphere of this movie is great for the first 30 minutes, maybe the first 45 if you're patient. But the payoff is not there. When you do a slowburn horror film, you gotta build up to something. The movie essentially spoils itself in the first 10 minutes, so I was expecting some sort of insight or additional context when it did happen, but there was nothing to hold onto. No plot, no climax, just 'an end' Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/25/24 Full Review Jay A I hate myself for watching this through. Conceptualism art, not scary at all. Everyone that had a part in making this movie should be ashamed. Ashamed that they think that their lives are the only thing that matters, and that everything they do and touch is better than you. Narcissistic crap. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/29/24 Full Review Liv L SPOILERS!!! Giving it half a star is being too generous. If I could give this zero stars I would. Genuinely the worst film I have EVER watched, absolutely no plot. I. AM. RAGING. Spent the whole time waiting for anything to happen and any hint of a plot. The main character did everything in slow mo. Why was polly walking around in a blindfold? Why did she murder Lily? What was with the book? Why did the flowers speak to Lily? Why did Mrs Blum die? I’m left with so many unanswered questions. Please don’t waste your time watching this. I’m not one to write a review but after the 1 hour 30 min torture I’ve just been through, I had to make an account and save you all wasting your time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/28/24 Full Review Len J My wife and I agree that this is almost the worst movie that we have ever watched. There was just one other that is worse than this one but we cannot recall the name of it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
