Alan g Typical period nonsense. Some good musical numbers. Lena Horne excellent as usual. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review Audience Member Had a few really good scenes, the rope dance, bedroom scene, Red preparing for the play was A+... Unfortunately the rest was mostly forgettable & too long. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Mediocre plot and musical, pulled down by the headache-inducing "big bands" of the era - in this case, Jimmy Dorsey. Fast forward over the no-melody no-song Dorsey band and the entire movie improves somewhat. This is Eleanor Powell's last "starring" role and it wasn't much of a role, thanks to MGM. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Not a great script, with Minnelli as a replacement director. Two segments are must see minutes though: Eleanor's rope dance and Red's attempt to put her to bed. Also of note are the musical segments with Lena Horne & Hazel Scott which were in the can when Minnelli came on board - just too good not to use. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member This MGM musical is one of Vincente Minnelli's worst films and, although it has some fine musical moments (Powell's rope dance, Jimmy Dorsey & His Orchestra playing the hit "Star Eyes," Lena Horne & Hazel Scott performing "Jericho") - the movie never recovers from the tired comedy shtick of Red Skelton and a recycled finale lifted from BORN TO DANCE.
