Critics Consensus

I Feel Pretty has a charming star and the outline of a worthwhile comedy -- but unlike its suddenly confident central character, it suffers from a fundamental lack of conviction.

Roxana Hadadi Pajiba I Feel Pretty is presenting itself as the kind of film that reveals how ugly we are for laughing at body-related stereotypes, but then why make those your jokes? May 21, 2018 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire Is this stuff supposed to be funny? These scenes are cut and shot like they're jam-packed with laughs, but our audience was so quiet and uncomfortable, you'd think we were at a rep screening of 'Shoah.' May 7, 2018 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Like a few too many films churned out of the predominantly male studio system and marketed to a female audience, you get a sense that, deep down, it doesn't have a particularly high opinion of women. Rated: 2/5 May 7, 2018 Full Review Sarah Vincent Sarah G Vincent Views “I Feel Pretty” centers the ordinary woman, gives her the delusion, adds a dash of The Devil Wears Prada, and depicts her personal aesthetic in the vein of Reese Witherspoon in “Legally Blonde.” The premise feels familiar but is subversive. Jun 12, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “I Feel Pretty” is a movie with a message – a genuinely good message. And we are constantly getting whiffs of it throughout. Unfortunately it’s buried in a tonally challenged film with an glaring identity crisis. Rated: 2/5 Aug 22, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review It's hard to imagine a more confused or flawed execution of a well-meaning message, except maybe Shallow Hal (2001). Jace E I enjoyed this movie more than I thought that I would. Amy Schumer's personality can be grating at times, but she wasn't terrible in this one. I don't know if she has the chops to be a leading lady, but she clearly put her best foot forward. The message is positive, the premise is quirky and there were some enjoyable moments throughout. The majority of the film is forgettable and all blends together, but I liked most of it. There aren't very many "stand out" moments that you leave the movie remembering, which is probably its biggest flaw. Best Character: Wheat Thin Best Quote: "I can eat whatever I want and still look like this." - Renee Best Scene: Meeting at the Dry Cleaners Best Piece of Score: Wish Transformation Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Peter K My girl is the most beautiful in this world! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/06/24 Full Review Andy S Me sentí identificada, me deja un bonito mensaje de que todo están en nuestra mente Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/18/24 Full Review Jeff M I think critics really missed the mark on this one! And I'm sad that I became acquainted with this movie after RomCom Madness had already begun. This is far from my favorite movie genre, but this was a shocking surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed. Not unlike last year's BRITTANY RUNS A MARATHON, this movie tackled subjects including weight issues and low self esteem that hit really close to home, making it a very personal and even occasionally moving experience for me. And I think Schumer's Renee Bennett is one of the best romantic comedy characters in a long time. I also loved the very subtle and unexpected romantic relationship between Schumer and Rory Scovel, who gives a very lived-in and low-key performance - definitely not your average romantic hero. And it's a treat to see Williams lighten up from her normal dramatic fare - her Minnie Mouse on helium voice made me laugh throughout the film. There's a lot to enjoy here, and Schumer comes across just as strongly here as she did in TRAINWRECK. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Dinos K Amy Schumer: I feel pretty Everyone else: You are not (not funny either) Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/23/24 Full Review Le W This is a light and humorous film, the main idea is that women should believe in themselves, no matter what kind of body, with confidence will be able to succeed. Of course, there are many logical loopholes in the movie, such as the fact that Renee can quietly go to the new product launch party to speak, which is impossible in reality. The good thing about this movie is that Renee is always playing alone, but she thinks she's beautiful. The audience sees the same person, and she really feels professional and beautiful when she's confident. In fact, it is not only the body, no matter what shortcomings or defects we can not change, we should believe in ourselves. No one is perfect. Confidence will do more with less. It's a movie to cheer up the girls. It's a movie to watch when you're disappointed in yourself. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
