Noel Murray Los Angeles Times The documentary can feel a little scattered due to its multiple angles, but it remains a fascinating and relevant tale, examining how any criminal justice system built around the idea that cops never lie is ripe for abuse. Mar 10, 2023 Full Review Carla Renata RogerEbert.com A glaringly honest recount of one city and its participants that will live in your spirit and psyche long after the credits roll. Rated: 4/4 Mar 10, 2023 Full Review Max Weiss Baltimore Magazine The film leaves room for at least a shred of optimism. As long as there are people willing to work toward justice, all hope is not lost. Rated: 3/4 Mar 9, 2023 Full Review Joey Keogh Vague Visages I Got a Monster shines a light on how systemic abuses of power are left unchecked and often allowed to proliferate, but it’s a tough watch in many ways because it’s clear that there are plenty of similar stories happening right now that aren’t being told. Mar 23, 2023 Full Review Rob Rector Film Threat A blaring siren as to what can happen when any one group is given blanket immunity to protect and to serve. Rated: 9/10 Mar 20, 2023 Full Review Stephen Silver Splice Today There’s not much new or inventive about it as a piece of filmmaking, it tells the story well Rated: 4/5 Mar 19, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Teri S The movie was very good it highlighted the the depiction of what was actually going on in the city of Baltimore this movie should be rated higher it was some Oscar acting in this movie if you want something pretty and truthful this is the movie to see two thumbs up Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/20/24 Full Review Sarah M I appreciated that this doc gave a voice to the victims of the corrupt cops. I understand why based on the trailer some people might have been disappointed that it wasn't an over the top true crime film but, this telling was and is an important angle to this type of corruption. I had read the book it was based on so perhaps I went in with different expectations from some of the other reviewers. I do think this is a very important story and it's okay for docs to not always be a sensationalized telling of events. If you want that then watch "We Own This City" which is the scripted series about this same case. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/09/23 Full Review Angela J Great honest documentary! Insight into the legal drawbacks and frustrating process for falsely accused citizens Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/25/23 Full Review Ryder M The movie fails to deliver a captivating and authentic portrayal of corruption within law enforcement. Shallow character development and a lackluster storyline leave viewers unengaged and unsatisfied. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/03/23 Full Review Austin M Disappointing documentary. The story was all over the place, the pacing was slow, and the production quality was amateurish. Don't waste your time on this one. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/03/23 Full Review Nathan M As an avid fan of true crime documentaries, I eagerly anticipated watching the film "The Explosive Truth: Baltimore's Corrupt Cops." However, my excitement quickly turned into disappointment as I realized that this documentary failed to live up to its potential. Despite its intriguing premise and the gripping subject matter of America's most corrupt police unit, the Gun Trace Task Force, the execution of the film left much to be desired. First and foremost, the storytelling lacked depth and coherence. While the film promised to take viewers on a thrilling cat-and-mouse game, it instead felt disjointed and scattered. The narrative failed to provide a clear structure or a well-defined timeline, leaving me confused and struggling to connect the dots. The absence of a strong central narrative thread made it difficult to stay engaged throughout the documentary. Furthermore, the film suffered from a lack of emotional investment. The characters, who should have been at the forefront of this shocking story, were presented in a superficial manner. There was no effort made to delve into their motivations or explore the psychological aspects of their corruption. As a result, the documentary felt detached and failed to elicit any genuine empathy or intrigue. Additionally, the filmmaking techniques employed were unimpressive. The cinematography was bland and uninspiring, and the editing felt choppy and inconsistent. I expected a visually compelling documentary that would immerse me in the gritty streets of Baltimore, but instead, I was left with a series of poorly shot scenes that failed to capture the essence of the city or the gravity of the events that unfolded. Lastly, the documentary lacked a fresh perspective. While the book upon which it was based received critical acclaim, the film failed to bring anything new to the table. It merely retreaded familiar territory without offering any unique insights or revelations. As someone who was already familiar with the Gun Trace Task Force's story, I was hoping for a fresh perspective or additional details, but instead, I was presented with a rehashed narrative that failed to leave a lasting impression. In conclusion, "The Explosive Truth: Baltimore's Corrupt Cops" fell short of its potential. With a disjointed narrative, shallow characterizations, uninspired filmmaking techniques, and a lack of originality, this documentary failed to captivate and engage its audience. It was a missed opportunity to shed light on an important and shocking true story, and I cannot recommend it to anyone seeking a compelling true crime documentary experience.
