A year after running over a fisherman and dumping his body in the water, four friends reconvene when Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) receives a frightening letter telling her that their crime was seen. While pursuing who he thinks is responsible for the letter, Barry (Ryan Phillippe) is run over by a man with a meat hook. The bloodletting only increases from there, as the killer with the hook continues to stalk Julie, Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.).

I’ll be real: Jennifer Love Hewitt is the reason this movie stands out for me, but that doesn’t mean I can’t see its flaws. She brings that “final girl” energy and gives the whole story a little more weight than it probably deserves. The rest of the cast does their job, nothing mind-blowing, but solid enough for a slasher flick. Directing and production are classic late-90s horror, with all the fog, rain, and moody lighting you’d expect. Some parts of the script are a bit clunky, and there are a few plot holes you just have to ignore if you want to enjoy the ride. Still, there’s something fun about the whole setup, and it works if you’re in the mood for old-school teen horror. The score and sound do their thing, keeping the tension up even when the story gets a bit silly. All things considered, it’s a good slasher, nothing revolutionary, but definitely rewatchable if you’re into the genre. And honestly, Jennifer Love Hewitt is the main reason I’d go back to it again.
