Critics Consensus

Writer-director Mike Cahill remains an intriguingly ambitious talent, but with the uneven sci-fi drama I Origins, his reach exceeds his grasp.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online There are far too many times when the story simply looses its footing and falls into another tedious direction, leaving some angles completely dangling. Rated: C- Sep 2, 2017 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) Gradually mutates into a debate about the singularity of the soul, the spectre of reincarnation rearing its unexpected head under laboratory conditions. Rated: 3/5 Sep 28, 2014 Full Review Guy Lodge London Evening Standard Unapologetically soulful stuff, almost provocative in its lack of irony. Rated: 3/5 Sep 28, 2014 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema There is a great deal wrong with "I Origins," most noticeably the pacing. It is a slow burn, bordering on boring as it moves from one scene to the next. Rated: 2/5 Nov 14, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse The metaphysical love story may have asked many more questions than it could ever hope to answer but answers aren't the point of the film. Ideas are, and the film has those in spades. Rated: 3/5 Feb 1, 2021 Full Review Brent McKnight The Last Thing I See While this is definitely a science versus faith movie, Cahill who both wrote and directed, strikes a solid, sensible balance between the two sides, letting you reach your own conclusions. Natalia O This movie made me feel so deeply. I giggled, I cried, I held my hand in front of my mouth at times... I love how this move really makes you think and question, but doesn't quite answers anything for you. As I read in the other reviews some people didn't like how the story kept going and felt it to be a stretch. Me on the other hand really enjoyed the changes of paste and story. It is a bit much and maybe even rushed at times tho. But nothing takes away from the amazing acting and the great atmosphere that is created! The shots and the lightening are truly amazing! love love love Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/24/24 Full Review Audience Member the movie is both include drama and sci/fi. would definetly worth watching. some scientific ideas are not well written however still a great movie. will never ever forget this movie Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/22/24 Full Review Analia C Just to say that the scene of the elevator, although dramatic, is unforgettable.
