TV Guide Although cheap and juvenile, I Was A Teenage Zombie is amusing enough for those who enjoy the goofy films that turn up at midnight shows. steven and the ink machine A gem of 1980's cheesy horror. Reminiscent of Lloyd Kauffman. Hilarious! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/05/23 Full Review dave s Oh, my. I Was a Teenage Zombie really is as bad as it sounds, if not worse. Looking as though it was shot on an antique 8mm camera, the visuals are murky at best. Sounding as though it was recorded on a vintage, hand-held tape recorder, the audio is either tinny or echoey…or sometimes both. To further compound the already substantial production values issue, the lighting is ridiculous (shadows are cast everywhere), the make-up is amateurish (the zombies look more like aliens than they do the walking dead), the continuity is grossly lacking, and the list goes on. And that's not even touching on the bad acting or the silly script or the inane story. The soundtrack is actually decent (Los Lobos, The Violent Femmes, The Del Fuegos, and more!!), but you should really expect more than a solid soundtrack out of a movie. That's not asking for too much. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member This was a cheesy 80s horror comedy I hand't seen, but I have to say I wasn't missing much. The film is Troma quality (meaning incredibly low budget, with a strong emphasis on low-brow humor, blood, and naked bodies), but unlike Troma films, this one won't make you laugh. The story follow a group of high school friends who accidentally kill a drug dealer who then comes back for revenge as a zombie. Maybe the pitch on this one is that it's "I Know What You Did Last Summer" meets "Night of the Living Dead" meets "TheToxic Avenger." Most films that set out to be intentionally bad in a so-bad-it's-good sort of way rarely work (i.e. "Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf"), but Troma films or movies like like "Hobo with a Shotgun" or "Grindhouse" are able to find that sweet spot balancing camp and keeping a straight face. On the plus side for "I Was a Teenage Zombie," the soundtrack features many rising bands of the time, Del Feuegos, The Violent Femmes, Los Lobos, The Smithereens and others, but that's hardly enough to make you want to suffer though the film. Watch Troma, Grindhouse or Hobo instead. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member If I was rating solely on cinematography or general filmmaking technique, this would probably be a 1 star. But the story and the performances from several of the actors were great fun. It's basically an amateur Troma film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Near cult status with its knowing humor about how shitty a movie it truly is along with a decent storyline concerning zombies and you have a movie that definitely is so bad it's good but the movie makers know this as well and at times it works to their advantage while at other times it fails; it is, after all, a bad movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Teens inadvertently kill a drug dealer after he sells them substandard weed. The dealer then transforms into a zombie from contaminated water from the local nuclear power plant. Offers valuable lessons for high schoolers looking to score drugs.
