Pamela Hutchinson Silent London When it comes to rebellious on-screen teens, Ossi Oswalda's flirtatious, gender-bending minx feels decidedly modern. Mar 26, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A fascinating cross-dressing comedy with some curiously casual homoerotic overtones. It's certainly not the best material Lubitsch ever worked with, and he's still coming into his own as a director, but his light touch is still evident, and Ossi Oswalda does some pretty terrific work in the headlining role. Fun, charming, with some simultaneously antiquated and progressive ideas about gender. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member This Lubitsch directorial debut is instantly memorable. In this short film, he tells the tale of a young woman who, convinced that men get to have all the fun, disguises herself as a man, only to fall in love with another man at a party. This three reeler comedy is delightfully sexual ambiguous and its concept feels very ahead of its time particularly when we consider that this film was made in 1918. Nevertheless, it's also charming and elegant, never vulgar and never entirely silly, and although the gags are funny the romantic situations are equally as fun and charming. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member watched most of this in german film today... it wasn't funny! lol Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member A bizarre twist on crossdressing, which is already bizarre as it is, how about a girl who doesn't want to become a 'respectable lady', and decides to take a ride out town dressed as a man. One of Ernst Lubitsch's earliest comedies does obviously have gay undertones as you would expect from Lubitsch, with some exceptional setpieces like the club. Probably too short to be considered a full masterpiece, but definitely an interesting look at something that the Nazi party would've not liked so much. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member A girl is kept under strict supervision by her guardian, until she disguises herself as a man and seduces him. Second of an Ossie Oswalda double feature directed by Ernst Lubitsch. Creepy concept, but amusing with good acting. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member still very funny, and way ahead of its time! the hilarious ossi oswalda gives a great performance and embodies an untamed, self-conscious female character that must have meant a small revolution in the commercial cinema of the late 1910's.
